need more bass
Hey I am hope some stereo guru will chime in here.....I need more bass in the car, let me tell what has been done .........I replaced the original head unit with the best at the time (2 yrs AGO) that will do its own cross overs and separately wires the tweeters and midrange speakers with 5 different equalizer settings if I want, A and B pillar speakers have been replaced with focal speakers and I have a JL amp and a sub in a box that the Sound Innovations installer recommended.
I now have excellent highs mids and sub sound but the punch, percussion (what I call BASS) is still missing. I cant stand the sub vibration and I think I need more 250htz to 2000 htz thump...... hell my ram 1500 has better bass sound....I am really against pulling rear seats out and installing boxes......but I need some help finding either a better sub that goes the propper htz or some custom enclosures I would be willing to create to sit just in front of the tool kit but blend in with the flavor of the gts.....any thoughts would be appreciated NEED MORE punch of the percussion .....fyi I have the pioneer stage 4 head unit, and front and back focal tweeters and midranges with a 8 inch closed JL sub...( 6 channel) |

Adamant, thanks , and I do have an 8 inch JL sub back there same location,,,,I started fiddling with the dials and think I have hit on some good sounds,,,,,,still looking for that punch,,,,,I listen to a lot of jouney, queen, joan jett and some pop county that my wife likes,,,,,,I guess it is a never ending quest.....
Sway bar I think I will try billy bass, wouldnt hurt !!hahahahaha .....!!!! |

Andy you have some options. The spare tire replacement subwoofer should work, at the cost of the spare? Plenty of room in there for a sub and amp that should improve the sound quite a bit. I agree modern vehicles have far superior sound systems. I had a silly stereo in my car in high school....I do miss the power. My 2008 m3 had the upgraded stereo with two 8” subs under each front seat, pretty good. The stereo in 928’s has always been a weak spot. However love your music choices |
Was able to find some JL 6in base speakers an put them in the 6.5 in locations in the rear passenger locations instead of the 6.5in factory woofers. Drove them from a base only amp.
Don't know if they are still available, but they worked great!. |

What you are chasing is known as midbass in the audiophile community.
The best way to get that is to power your mid drivers (4 and 6 inch mostly) with an amp. Most head units only put out 12 watts per channel rms max whereas an amp can easily do over 100 watts per channel and give a cleaner signal. That will definitely give you more midbass. I run about 100 watts per channel to all 6 channels in my 81 with 200 watts going to the sub. This is all rms, or in other words what the amp can constantly supply and maintain. What you should do is try to match your amp to your speakers or get an amp more powerful than the rms rating of your speakers and have a pro set the gains. It is really worth it to power your speakers the way they were meant to be. Choosing replacement speakers also gets interesting. You have to look at frequency response graphs to see which ones will work best in your system and fill where you are lacking. It can get complicated to say the least with all the parameters of a speaker along with all the various eq curves you can use to blend everything together. |

I have a 12” sub with a dedicated 390 watt amp (located elsewhere.) The bass in mine is disco-like: deep, hard and accurate. You feel it in your gut. It’s effin’ awesome. Overall though, the sound in my ‘91 is not as perfect as it could be. The front seats create a “notch filter” in the signal from the 6” drivers in the C pillar. You lose some dbs in the 300-500 Hz (low mid-range) area IIRC. I have the exact data, it’s just not at my fingertips. The exact frequency isn’t the point though. The point is that if you can get a speaker into the front with better response down-low you’ll get better sound. The above is not a hair-brained theory. I have (well, had, he moved) ‘a guy’ with microphones and custom software. We collected data and formed the ‘front seat notch filter’ theory as a result. One of my clients has 3-ways (6”,4” & tweats) on all four corners. And that setup has a ‘richer’ sound becuase it isn’t missing the low mid-range. Thus I have data on this problem and an existence proof of the cure. This client’s setup has all the bells and whistles. (X-overs, zillion-band equalizer, etc.) It features a Bazooka Tube sub because my client wants to keep the spare. The BT is a vented (here: https://knowledge.sonicelectronix.co...fer-box-types/) design so, it’s a bit ‘loose’ sound-wise IMO. |
I used a 4” and separate tweeter in the front doors and a 6.5” in the rear panel locations. I did not want to cut anything. the door speakers have a high pass protection filter in the doors as well. 4-channel amp on the door and rear speakers. Separate bridged two channel on the sub, which was an old bose unit from a murano. While system works great. My Kenwood head unit has equalization and the amps have a series of filters built in. i am very happy with the sound - I listen to a lot of 80s rock as well...def leppard, ratt, bob jovi, dokken, etc. will try to post some pics later. |
That 8" JL sub is mounted in your hatch? What is powering it? Honestly, that should have plenty of punch, unless you want it really loud. That will do nothing for 250-2K though. As was stated above, that's mid-bass, and your rear seat drivers can help with that. I mounted a pair of Earthquake speakers there which are great with mid-bass, but you need something like the adapters that Hans offered (no idea if he still has them).

Seriously: if you have something sitting in front of a speaker, EQ settings aren’t your issue. In the typical 928 seating arrangement, the driver’s ears do not have a clear path to the 6” drivers in the C pillar. |
