Newbie here for 928 but not for Porsche Long

I have owned Pcars for 20 years now and currently have a 2010 Panamera Turbo, Owned Many 996 turbos and GT3's but has always been my dream to pick up a 928. I ended up doing some work for a client of mine and he gave me the car so my cost basis is very low. The car I picked up is 1984 928 US Spec, California car. I do not know what the color is called but its some form of silver. I am putting together the history on a spreadsheet to track everything. Here a little history.

Two owner car

- Car was in Florida until 2013
- 2nd Owner purchased and brought to CT
- The miles currently are 44000
- There could be an odometer discrepancy (sorting this out now, could have been inputted wrong)
- Car has been sitting for 2.5 years outside not started
- This past week we drained a small amount of fuel that was in tank.
- Drained Oil and added new Oil
- Replaced Battery
- Added Transmission Fluid
- Car started and I drove it to my building
- Rides Very Rough and my mechanic said the front suspension needs to be replaced. He is actually the one I got the car from. (Long Story)
- So as it stands the car runs and is at my buidling
- I think car was previously painted. I found an old ebay listing that the seller who references he selling for a friend states the car was painted.
- The body is in decent shape
- Interior is shot ( Not as bad as some of the cars I have seen on here but pretty bad)
- Gave car a good washing, no detail yet.

So this is a list of things need that need to be addressed. Not sure where to start but I was thinking some basic service.

- Rear Trunk Lid not latching completely, It clicks but I can just tug it up with my hand
- There is some wires that look like they were just cut (pic attached) They are coming out on the right side of the trunk
- There is an adapter that looks like its unplugged from something (Pic Attached)
- Passenger Side Mirror all black, maybe something with autodimming. Did these cars have this?
- Not all power seat functions
- A/C Lever Broken
- Passenger window won't go done
- Dash lights not working
- Leaking transmission fluid slowly but leaking

Obviously after these items we need to address the engine and suspension, lastly will be cosmetic.

I have put together the service history that I have pieced together, see attached pic.

Congratulations on the new acquisition. the outside looks good aside from the obviously missing the front spoiler. At first glance it looks similar to my 1985 Silver Metallic paint code 936. Mine is also over Burgundy interior. Coincidentally my 85 was hit in the passenger side and I just this past Friday picked up an 86.5 (also silver metallic) to replace it. Not that my cars was necessarily in that great of cosmetic shape, but if there is anything specific you need, feel free to shoot me a message.

- Rear Trunk Lid not latching completely, It clicks but I can just tug it up with my hand
Take a look at the latch receiver in the body of the car. There are a couple possibilities, but most common is the plastic insert crumbling with age. post a picture looking in to the receiver and we can help diagnose.
- There is some wires that look like they were just cut (pic attached) They are coming out on the right side of the trunk.
possibly related to the next item on your list?
- There is an adapter that looks like its unplugged from something (Pic Attached).
Looks like the remains of a cell (Car) phone installation.
- Passenger Side Mirror all black, maybe something with autodimming. Did these cars have this?
No auto dimming. what has happened is the glass portion of the mirror has fallen off just leaving the heating element (heated side mirrors controlled with the heated rear window).attached to the mirror housing.
- Not all power seat functions
Quite possibly the switches, but can't determine without further troubleshooting.
- A/C Lever Broken.
If you are talking about the slide knobs this is very common and they are cheap, but you will likely need to remove the HVAC head from the dash to replace them.
- Passenger window won't go done.
the window switches are prone to failure as well
- Dash lights not working
the rheostat under the dash tends to corrode. I actually just bypassed mine and connected the two wires directly together. which factory dash bulbs you don't have to worry about it being too bright.
- Leaking transmission fluid slowly but leaking

Thanks for all the answers. One note about the front spoiler. According the the option list I was provided in the other thread this car was ordered with M470 Without front and rear spoiler.

I have an '83 which is very similar to your '84. Too bad there have been some hacks working on the car but that can all be fixed and it's great that the car is running. Looks like the front seat leather is still in good shape! When these cars are sorted they can be very reliable and are super fun. And with some sticky tires you're pulling cornering G forces with the best of them!

As a quick note on just one photo, the wires coming out of the little detachable box mounted on the passenger doorsill are probably going to the rear speakers. That little box contains a mile counter for the O2 sensor (which I think triggers a dash light every 30000 miles) and, at least on my car, once contained a small audio amplifier for the speakers. Although it looks like something may have been added there too, but it's hard to tell.

The other photo showing cut off wire cables behind the rear passenger seat has me concerned -- that looks like the main wire harness for the brake lights but it's been a while since I've been back there. Where does the remaining end of that harness go?

Also the front clearly has mounting holes for the front spoiler, and of course it's got the stock rear spoiler too. I'm curious about that option code, hadn't heard of it before!

bureau13 12-19-2018 04:19 PM

I would think if they ordered it without the front spoiler, it wouldn't have those holes where it bolts to. Also...it has the rear spoiler? So something seems off there.

What are your intentions with this car? (That sounds like you just asked my daughter out on a date lol) I ask because if you plan on keeping it and driving it vs fixing a few things and selling it, the advice is likely different.

If I were keeping it to drive, I would definitely look into the power steering lines, auto transmission lines (I assume? ATF is pretty flammable but I don't know if they run in a problem area like the power steering lines) and engine compartment fuel lines. If they're original they should all definitely be replaced for safety reasons.

I wonder about the timing belt as well, but your year should be a non-interference motor I think, so if it failed it wouldn't be catastrophic.

Welcome to the Shark Tank.

As noted above, you have the rear spoiler and holes in the fenders for the front. It may not have had them new, but it's had a front in the past. Roger at 928s R Us has new front spoilers, cheaper than they've been in a while.

Where is the trans leaking from? It's very common for the pan bolts to be overtightened, which bends the pan and it then leaks (I see new trans pan gasket in 14). There are a couple other typical leak spots. Some are reasonably simple, others are more involved.

None of that wiring looks stock. It looks like multi wire cable. Old phone setup, aftermarket stereo, something like that.

Seats & window are likely switches. They can be taken apart and cleaned fairly easily.

Dash lights can easily be the dimmer rheostat. As noted above, it can be bypassed. It can also be cleaned without too much effort.

I'm a bit skeptical that the entire front suspension 'needs to be replaced'. What, exactly, does he think needs to be replaced?

First off, it looks low. That will adversely affect ride. It could have stiffer springs and/or shocks. Same result.

You can put your VIN in the "Official VIN Check" thread. A few guys have access to the production records for cars made after 1980. They can't tell original color or interior, but they can tell you what options it came with.

Also, read through the "New Visitor" sticky at the top. Lots and lots of useful info for you.

Thanks for the detailed reply. i took some pictures of the trunk clip. It does look to have a crack in it,

Thank you very much for the offer as well on your old car.

76FJ55 12-20-2018 04:08 PM

Yes, you have two issues doing on there. The latch does have a crack in it as you pointed out, and also the receiver is missing the insert.

The crack in the latch is fairly common on the alarm style latches. The Alarm latch is, in my opinion, excessively expansive, and most replace it with a non-alarm latch which is also less likely to crack.

The missing insert can be had from a number of vendors like Roger at 928srus.com for example.

I took some more pictures and actually pulled the wires out. They go around to under the dash. I am thinking maybe an old amp. Also maybe a disc player.

I just ordered the insert thanks. I don't see the alarm latch for under $400.00. If I do the non alarm latch does the key cylinder get changed?

76FJ55 12-20-2018 05:11 PM

Yes, a replacement latch will have a different key cut, but it is not that hard to re-key the cylinder or potentially just move your existing cylinder to the replacement latch.

Duane in Miami 12-21-2018 01:08 PM

Thats a good questions as to what are my intentions lol. I am really not sure except that I would like to restore it over time and keep it long term. I think the first thing is to just to do some basic service i.e filters, wiper blades, fix the rear trunk lid. Then I am thinking to tackle the front suspension. There is is so many things I dont know where to start.

Thanks for the reply. I did read new visitor. I got my owners manual in the mail yesterday and started reading through it.

The suspension parts he had listed to replace are

Lower Ball joints.
Upper Control arms
Camber eccentrics
