Default New (to me) 1979 928

So in the past I’ve bought a few cars and fixed them up a bit and sold them at a modest profit. I decided this time to stick with the 928 and am hoping to get it running and driving by this coming spring. I bought the one I’ve heard about talked about on this site. 79 base model that was gold and has had a terrible repaint of a purply blue. Not sure exactly what color it actually is but I think I’ve seen others this color so it may be a Porsche color... although maybe not... not sure at this point. It sat for some time, not sure how long but I suspect about 4 years... Since getting it I’ve pulled all the brake calipers, freed them up and replaced the pads... I have all the flexible lines and I’ll get to those this winter. I drained the gas, replaced the fuel filter and changed the oil and filter. Replaced the battery and do have it running.... next steps are attacking some electrical gremlins. There’s a bit of a parisitic draw on the battery when everything is off. The fuse block seems like it’s in pretty good shape but missing a relay or two and one is jumped using a short run of wire... not sure why yet. Anyhow..... when running there is definitely a noise, kinda a bearing noise like the power steering, water pump, alternator or something is quite right. Although when I had my 944 it made a similar sound and the person that bought it said it was the torque tube... could be I suppose but would it make that noise when Idleing? Anyone in the Portland Maine area that knows more than me that would like to come have a beer and take a listen? Anyhow again and I apologize for such a long first post, oil was black as a boot but no signs of antifreeze or metal.. so that’s a good sign..... I’ve done a ton of reading here and learned a huge amount...and for that I thank you all.... look forward to getting this thing resurrected and running it some this summer..

Nice! They look like 968 wheels - a bit bigger cut outs than Cup 1's?

Nice adventure you are on. Congrats. That relay block with the jumper may be the starter bridge. Standard on the '78 and '79 MY I believe. You can read more about it here.

you may may be right, biggest issue at the moment is the alternator doesn’t seem to be working....

Welcome. It looks like you have a nice starting point.

One thing to know - There are supposed to be empty fuse and relay spots in the board. Putting fuses and relays into the empty slots 'just to fill them' is a bad idea.
Some cars have a 'relay bridge' in the panel. That might be what the wire is. The bridge is a brass piece that is an actual Porsche part. You can get one from Roger, if it's supposed to be there.

There are charts for most years on here somewhere.

A search should find the thread.

this isn’t an actual relay bridge, it’s a wire and I was incorrect when I said it was where a relay should be, it’s actually in the multi pun connectors directly below the relays..... all the relays and fuses that are supposed to be there are. Still have a parisitc draw even when I pulled all fuses.... that may be fun to find....

If you still have a draw with fuses ruled out it could be a relay. See MrMerlins suggestion in post #2 of this thread.

thanks, I’ll give that a try and see if any of them stay overly warm. I’m also not getting any increase in voltage at the battery when running so going to check all connections at the alternator

With an alternator issue, it could be the voltage regulator. Cheap fix. Also, alternators can be repaired. Further, ring out the exciter wire to eliminate that as the issue.

That's next, it's covered in oil...need to clean that all up and do some investigation...... only getting about 11.6 volts at the battery when running...... new battery.....

Replaced the window switches today... they were not working.... work now but slow.....

Progress....
