Default 85 Euro: Parking Brake Light Always On Help

The parking brake light is displayed constantly on the gauge.

Troubleshooting:
  • The switch looks good. No rust/corrosion, attached and functions.
  • The wire/connector side that attaches to switch looks good as well.
  • I tested connectivity at switch end of the wire and at connector #5 in the central warning system in the dead pedal and got tone. If I disconnect the the black side of the central warning the dash light will go off.
  • Also, whether I have the wire connected at the switch or not, it still displays.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

It sounds like the signal wire is grounded up line from the switch get multi meter on continuity connect one end to the chassis the other to the wire you should hear the tone then follow the wire Bach up the harness when the tone shut off that’s where it’s damaged

Check for continuity from the wire at the lamp monitor to ground. Should, I think, show continuity with switch closed (parking brake set) and no continuity with switch open or wire disconnected.
Wire could be shorted to ground.

So when looking form at the diagram below - I get solid tone on the red line. Assuming I am reading this right, when I connect the two probes to 18 on the central warning box and 7 on the cluster plug, NADA. No tone. As I look over the wiring harness and cluster plug, everything looks unmolested, so I am not sure what's up or next steps at this point. Stan?

Wire at terminal 5 to ground.
Should have no continuity with brake off or wire disconnected.

lets start with,
what was the last thing you fixed?
When was the system working correctly?
Did you put the test leads on the wire as I suggested?
one from the disconnected female connector at the E brake handle and one to ground?
Then wiggle the harness as you move closer to the its next connected point?

stan, this problem existed since I picked up the car. So it's never worked. I am working through a myriad of electrical gremlins and this is one of the last few. Yes, i did. Here are the results.

connecting negative ground to female point at e brake switch and red probe at ground - over 1000 in resistance. No tone. Now when I start the engine, I do get tone but still heavy resistance. Still above 1000. Now the interesting this when the central warning lamp indicator comes on '!' , when I press the ebrake switch, the warning indicator will turn off or on depending if depressed or not. So that's working. However, the dash light is constant on.

Also, I wiggles the harness all the way up to through the dash to back of the pod while monitoring resistance and it stayed the same.

disconnect the connector from the warning unit under the dead pedal,
and see if touching the positive lead to the removed female connector from the E brake switch has continuity to ground,
NOTE set the multi meter for the tone selection so touching the tips together offers a beep noise.
Your warning unit may be damaged you could swap yours into another car

Stan, i disconnected the black plug from the warning box under dead pedal. Hooked up red probe to female end at ebrake and black to ground. No tone with ignition on or off.

stan - when you say box you mean the one under thedead pedal correct? So the assumption is that if I swap to another car and the park light comes on then the box is bad. If not I have wiring problem somewhere else...

So after taking a break from this for a while I had an epiphany. On my 84 Euro the handbrake light is on the volt/oil gauge. On the 85 euro, the "Parking Brake" light was on the fuel gauge, right above "Parking Lights". The 85 Euro dash lights up with "SERVO" where the handbrake light SHOULD be. After doing some digging on rennlist, I had found that SERVO was most likely a 944 gauge carryover. The previous owner had put in some EL gauges and maybe they were from a 944 pattern. Anyway, I had removed the gauge light bulbs from the SERVO area thinking I wouldn't need them. Long story short, the ebrake is connected to the SERVO light. The dash light works just fine in conjunction with brake switch. Mystery solved.

Now I had to go figure out what "Parking Brake" is and why that's being triggered...

Thanks Stan for all the troubleshooting help! Next time I see you at Frenzy the beer is on me!!

yes the 944 pod can be swapped with 928 gauges,
though they might have different wire layouts
I will take you up on that beer sounds good
