Metal gas cap OEM for 79 Euro?
Hello, I have a 79 Euro that was French delivered, 79 chassis 0057. The gas cap it came with is a sawed off plastic one, I assumed that was because the key had been lost by the PO.
However I just bought a red plastic cap from ebay (the one in the picture) and when screwed on it protrudes from the car so that the gas cap door will not shut flush.
Do I have a quirky factory variant that had a metal cap a la 78, or am I missing something?
And does anyone want to buy a red 928 gas cap?

Maybe your filler neck spacer shrunk and has fallen out?

I have one here off of a '79 but it's as hard as a rock- like a solid chunk of plastic. Will be interested to see if the NOS ones are still pliable. They sort of grasp onto the flange in the body sheet metal there.

Either by way of 3d printing with a flexible plastic, or by carving out a replacement from a block of a suitable material.
I'm going to be taking a look at the tank on my car, since the filler neck is awfully close to the top of the gas door opening.

Not much else to add other than a thick piece of rubber or neoprene works well in lieu of the P-part.
Also a spacer on the tank filler 'snout' strap helps to not over-tighten the strap and stress the snout.
And what Droo said about adjusting the cradle, very important.
Re gas caps, there's no definitive proof of when the change occurred, other than we know it was near the end of MY78. I had '78 RoW s/n 2384 (near of of MY78 production) which had a plastic gas cap.

Pics, for posterity. Distorted from 39 years of duty on a '79:
