Been lurking here a few weeks, but normally post in the racing/DE forum as that's my real love..the racetrack. I currently track a 14 981S with some significant track modifications. Once in a blue moon, I see a 928 at the track, but it's rare.
I have had many Porsches as daily drivers over the last 25 years. Boxsters, 911's of various sorts, and I still drive a 911 as my DD.
When I was much younger, my dad bought a used 928S (I don't remember the exact MY, but 82-86 would be my guess.) It was the only Porsche he ever owned, and not really sure who loved that car more, him in the left seat or me in the right. I don't think I ever got to drive it, but I sure loved riding around in that right seat, and my dad sure loved driving it.
It was the car that got me hooked on the Marque. My dad loved that 928, and so did I.
Anyway, since then, I always wanted a 928 of some sort and now (some 30 years later), I have some garage space to put one.
That's why I'm here, just to peek in and try to learn more about these cars (928's), and get somewhat knowledgable enough to buy one. I wouldn't track it, just drive it on nice weekends around town and maybe a longer roadtrip sometimes.
Something reliable (hopefully) that won't suck my wallet dry. You folks have a lot of knowledge about these cars, so I'm hoping I can learn enough from you all to make a good decision when buying one.
I am really just starting to seriously look for one now.

Welcome to the 928 Forum! Depending on which NJ swamps you live in, you are merely close or possibly closer to Stan (Mrmerlin) near Philadelphia. He's the go-to guy for 928 stuff in that region. Find his thread on his current GP White with blue insides project, which he's bringing to current on everything that you'd be worried about buying a 928. Plan a visit to him to look at that car (is is or will soon be available) and get some great indoctrination on the cars and what to look for. Like most Porsches, the cheapest one to purchase too often ends up being the most expensive to own. Start with the best example you can find and afford, and you'll be way ahead of the curve.
Welcome to the shark tank! Your strategy to come here to learn before buying is a good one. I've had 928's for over 20 years and consider myself a rank amateur compared to many of the real experts here.
Any particular colors that you are looking for, and of course, are you wanting a stick or automatic?
You'll need to decide whether you like the older body style (OB) up to 86.5 or the newer one (87 on) and then there are the GTS which were the fully evolved version of the breed (flared rear fenders), but they command high dollars these days. 86.5s are very popular as they were the transition car between motor generations, so they have the older style body but the S4 engine.

I agree with Petza, your baseline will revolve around which series you find most aesthetically pleasing, and then the great auto v. manual debate. once you can sort that out, then continue on the research
needed regarding maintenance and costs.
Dive in, don't mind the sh-sh-sh-sharks! 928 isn't really setup for tracking, so your use will be touring. Perfect 928 fit. Sounds like you can wrench on them, which opens up your field to many different grades of 928s, and many diff prices. I bought the first 928 rolling wreck I looked at. Maybe better to look at a handful and get some info here before diving too deep. Early cars are more elemental, lighter and less refined. Later S4 and GTS are the whole enchilada and then some. Middle cars are a mix, and some good deals in the 81-84 grouping.
Read the FAQ and if you have specific questions on a car, ask away.

I think I like the 87 and later body styles, but I'm open to any MY at this Point. Would not rule out a later MY GTS car. I think they are beautiful, but I think all 928's are beautiful.
Def want a manual. Most of my P-cars to date have had the 3rd pedal. I would not rule out an Auto if the right car came along, but a manual is def preferred.
As for color, white and silver are not my favorite colors on Porsches. Again, if the right car came along and it was white or silver, I would not rule it out. My favorite color would be a dark type green, like Moss Green and similar.
I love this color on the 928 which I saw in a classified here on RL a little ways back:

Welcome to the 928 forum. If you happen to find a 928 you like, best to run it by the crew here before bidding/purchasing. The experienced eyes will chime in with there thoughts on condition, etc., you can then use as a negotiating tool. Don't do what I did.....
I did the same thing as docmirror, I got the first (only) 928 I looked at. I didn't look at or drive any other 928s..I joined Rennlist just to "prospect" that particular car..It turned out that that car was '83 928 Euro-Spec car with 300+ HP 5 speed manual gearbox and no EPA crap on it...Vin# WP0ZZZ92*********,It sat in the lot at Black-Tie Classic Autos with no takers at $5900 for 4 years that I know of...I offered $3500 CASH and drove it home, In the past 8 years I've put another $6000 in parts into it......So call it $10,000 over 8 years (SO FAR) LOL I'm not looking for a 'Show Car', or a 'Collector Car', I want a nicely turned out example of a 35+ year old GT car. I'm about done with it mechanically,,,NOW to make her look Pretty..
There's nothing I can buy with $10,000 that has this kind of power performance and long range drive-ability... My "Cheap" Porsche 928...LOL
