Cayman S vs "The Thug"
So one of my PCA friends has christened my car "The Thug," and I've decided I rather like that. It's loud and rough and always looks like it's from the disreputable side of the family at PCA gatherings. Leaving one of those gatherings the other day, I found myself at a stop light next to a friend in his Cayman S. It's stock, and not a 718, but otherwise I'm don't know too much about it. This guy is a good driver though, and his car seems to be tip top. I have pretty much a full exhaust...headers, x-pipe and straight through to a Borla muffler. I had not yet put in my Porken chips, although unbeknownst to me I was running Autothority chips. We, umm, had a little test run, and my friend later admitted he turned off his AC, something I forgot to do. (Disclaimer: This was all within legal limits, I'm sure, and probably didn't actually happen at all, yada yada yada, we weren't street racing just testing, or as my dad used to say...blowing the carbon out, lol).
He should beat me, right? 0-60 on any Cayman S seems to be around 5, give or take a couple tenths.
He didn't. We were neck and neck. I've been preening about it ever since, so let me down easy if this is an expected result lol.
PS: The Porken chips are DEFINITELY faster...

Manual or PDK? 987.1, 987.2, or 981? A 981CS w/PDK will be hard to beat. With a manual, you have to wind-out that flat-six to get hp. Short-shift and you got nothin.’

I think many of these Cayman S people are just in it for the looks and dont really know how to drive. I did a track day at Limerock and there was this perfectly clean Cayman S who everybody passed. Too bad becasue Cayman is ideal for track like Limerock that doesnt favor power.

Oh, he knows how to drive. He's a DE instructor and his track car is a Cayman GTS. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to hang with that one.
To answer the questions above, I don't know specifically which generation, or if it's a manual or not. I should find out. I doubt he was short-shifting, given that he told me he shut off the AC to be ready.

Just because he's a DE Instructor, doesn't mean he know how to launch in a drag race - I'm an instructor and know jack about launching effectively. Next time try it on a roll - takes most of the driver skill out of the equation.
Funny story - I was driving my GT350 up to a red light when a S550 Benz pulled into my lane at the last minute - now he's first at the light. Light turns and he takes off, unexpectedly to me, fast - I did everything I could to barely reel him in. Once we both backed off he pulls to the right, and I slowly pass him. It was an 80 year old man! Must have been a drag racer from back in the day, though with that twin turbo V8, AWD and Auto trans, all he had to do was mash the throttle, while I had to fumble around with the clutch, manage wheel slip and shift.

Yup. Power-to-weight ratio is the first comparison point. A Porkenized S3 running right, has - I would think - equal or more bhp as the ~320 bph 9A1 engine in the 987.2. But, the torque curve in the 928 is favorable - broad and flat - relative to the N.A. flat-six motors that have 'ramps' for torque curves.
On the 718 though the turbo flat-4s are no joke (even if, to some, they sound funny.) Those things max torque at ~2000 rpm (+/- depending upon Base-spec or S-spec) and have a carpenter's dream torque curve until the marketing-specified boost cutoff rpm is reached.)
A base 718 with 'only' 300 bhp can probably run with a Porkenized S3 or a stock GT.

having both a 981 S and an 84 euro in tip top shape....the 981 wins hands downs. It's so damn fast...the euro throws you back in the seat a little more with the torque increase...
