Default WSM's on ebay

I was not going to be able to bid on the manuals this week-end on ebay. I called Sunset Porsche (Portland OR) and they told me "if" they could get them in the future they would be no less than $800 but they hadn't even went into publication yet.
At this point I em the seller an offer he countered and I got them shipped & insured for $450.
I'm sure people will think I'm crazy but if you need them you need them and I think in the not too distant future this will be a great price.

Did you get the ones in the gray or red binders? I'm assuming the gray because the red only covered up to 1985?

I just paid $450 for a set of the gray (1978-1995) delivered.

<8 vol. set covers MY '78-'93. Older sets are maroon, newer sets are grey.

I was under the impression maroon (8vol) would cover my 91? My understanding was the gray had the updates and covered 93-95 also? You're scaring me.

I really need to say something here, and you will all have to pardon me if you think this is inproper.

Why are we even concerned that the price of the manuals have gone past what a normal individual would pay?

You can get the FULL set of manuals, and PET, from ebay or privatley. Probably for around 25.00 dollars for the manuals, and about that for PET.

You can then buy a used LAPTOP with a CD ROM on ebay for a couple hundred, and there you have the manuals, in yoru garage, and you could get that laptop as dirty as you want. All for less then Porsche's price for a set of book (all be it very important books).

I do not understand the book fixation. Project928? Fine. I'd pay for that as well.

I mean Jeez, I could got you a laptop, the manuals on CD, and a Projector to project it against your garage wall in 50x50 big screen size, all for less then 800 dollars.

Even 450 is rediculous.

JM will be sending out CDs soon with EVERYTHING ELSE you could ever imagine about the 928. Technical pubs, etc.

I agree for the most part. I have always wanted a set however and would not feel comfortable taking a computer to the "throne" with me....

50x50 screen and a laptop for less than $450? Or even $800? Sign me up! Especially if that 50x50 projector you found has a VGA direct input.

Why do we buy anything? Because we want it. I like having the manual. I have the CD with the PET and manual in PDF form. I like having the books to flip through. I like having the huge wiring diagrams to study.
I have a 19" LCD on my computer and a 15" on my laptop. Still doesn't compare to sitting down in my comfy chair and flipping through the design and internals of my car. I'd also not bring my $2000 laptop into the garage while I'm working on my car. Even a cheap working laptop will be a few hundred dollars with a tiny screen. One small slip, whoops, no more laptop. Yes you can print out the sheets as needed, I’ll do so to keep my original pages clean.

The removing of my intake and other various parts I'm cleaning up on my motor will save me more than the cost of the manuals vs having my mechanic do it anyway. So the way I see it, they were free after this job and will start making me money on the next project.

I don't understand why every time someone mentioned they found a set and bought them they get attacked? Nothing against you Brendan, it's happened to me twice this month alone! I've seen it happen to other people in other forums as well. So what if we want to spend $450 on some books? I think the guy trying to get a group to spend $1800 on a carbon hatch is nuts, you don't see me calling him out.

Sorry, rant over.

....Projectors, of the older-non-uni-light variety, are extremely usefull for at-home sitations like having a video on your laptop, and simply projecting on a white wall. My laptop from Dell, was 1800 dollars, and that had EVERYTHING a year and a half ago. Right now, TOL is still 1800-2000. I'm speaking of getting:

When I said 50"x50" I was referring to the size of the projected screen from the laptop.

...I printed the out, and taped them together for a nice huge poster on my garage wall. (Not that may car will have much of the original wiring when I'm done)

... I am all for everyone buying whatever the hell they damn well please, all the way to buying Winston Churchhill's ****-hating bird at auction. I'm the one who's been paying a loan on my car but I havern't driven it since last october.
It has to do with the free market, and why Porsche has decided that its okay to publish these books for 1450 dollars or 800 or whatever price over a couple hundred. But the price will be what the market will bear I suppose. I just sit with my laptop and study the pages a bit, and then print the ones out that I need. I zoom in on certain pics to see exactly what they are trying to show.

Now that is a damn good idea. I could get one of my printing companies that print my photos to print out a 6' x 10' of the diagram.

No problem. I'm still not taking my laptop into my garage. Even a $400 one. I'd end up impaling the screen with a screw driver.

I like my set of manuals, no love them, and I don't care if you call me stupid for paying $537 for the set - they're in perfect condition.

I have the maroon 9 volume set and it covers up to 1995. Maybe the PO updated it or something.

And like others, I like curling up in a big chair with my manuals on rainy nights. Some of the best reading around!!!

Not necessarily. I bought a Red set with updates to 90 and have the inserts for MYs 91-95 which I haven't put in yet. The key when buying is ask how far up the wiring diagrams go, then you know how current the set is (as long as the updates were placed in the manual correctly).

About 10 minutes ago we bought a 1984 Euro (310hp) car for parts and included in the deal was a grey 9 volume set of manuals. For those of you who want the printed version of the manuals the price is $400 plus shipping. I'll be the first to admit the the CD is much cheaper but ther are still many advantages to the printed version.

Cool

I have the CD, but I must say that having owned manuals for previous models, the printed version is better. It takes skill and then some to navigate through the CD. And then when I find the page I want, it isn't really there. I am glad to have the CD, but when I find enough littler kids to beat up and from whom to take lunch money I will buy a printed version and spend the time I save enjoying other things.

If I ever sold the 79, the manuals WOULD NOT GO WITH THE CAR! They would have to be bought separately and only if I was never to buy another 928..
