928 guys what do you think - 1981 928 silver/black, auto, sunroof $4000
Guys,
would appreciate your input - Found a 1981 928 in Colorado - silver/black, auto w/sunroof
exterior in really nice condition as well as black leather interior - seats/carpet/dash all nice clean and straight.
Owner nice guy and had been very willing to send me start/drive videos/etc
Issues: Car's mileage is unknown - - Autocheck report shows speedo change at 152K miles back in 2001 but many inaccuracies w/the information - salvage/rebuilt title as well but previous owner told current owner the car had been sitting and original owner had lost title so reason for the rebuilt/salvage was due to lost tile and DMV mistake. Previous owner was current owners landlord so could be true but who the hell knows for sure.
I can get the car for $4000 + $1000 to ship to my house.
It really looks nice and drives well - both keys/manuals and very little service records
What do you guys think?? I'd probably keep it for a year then maybe sell - Would be fun to have back same year/model/color of my 1st ever Porsche.
Considering the worn out 1980 silver/black 5 speed on BAT sold for $4200, I would have to think this is a very good deal??
Input appreciated!!

I think having nice paint (in a color that you like) and interior are the 2 most important things about the 928. If you don't mind the auto (I don't), it is definitely worth it for sure.
Any car with a decent exterior/interior that starts, shifts, steers, and brakes with a design that is the 928 for $5,000 (car + delivery) cannot be a bad deal!
Of course, since it is >150k miles and has a salvage/rebuilt title, I would start the offer at $2,500! :-)
Good luck-Hoi

I find it very hard to believe that the title was branded as 'salvage/rebuilt' because it was lost.
It doesn't work that way. There are processes & procedures for re-issuing lost titles.
Salvage titles are issued when the car was damaged beyond repair and the insurance company paid out.
In some (fairly rare) cases, a car is stolen and later recovered after the insurance company paid out. It then belongs to the insurance company, and they usually auction it off.
Those can have salvage titles, but not always.
In this case, I would be suspicious of a crashed & rebuilt car or a flood damaged car.

That's about market, without seeing pics, and driving the car. I sure wouldn't go over $4000 for it. A CO car could have rust issues that are unseen, or it could have other issues that are gonna cost a bit. 81 auto in a common color is not a collector candidate, and with high miles and branded title, I think the buyer will be very happy to get $4k. $1000 seems high for shipping to WA state. Shop around, it doesn't need to be enclosed.
