Default 928 S4 Manual Transmission Leak

I had to pass on going to Frenzy this year again unfortunately. I was driving the Porsche hard last night, and this morning seems like the entire gear oil was on the garage floor. I had to leave early today and did not check the car. Any ideas? Edward

What was the last thing you touched on your car in that transmission area? Did you change the fluid? Top off the diff?

I have had the 928 since 2012 and have not touched anything on the rear transmission area. Couple of weeks I replace the rear pads. Prior to that I hade the clutch replaced by my Porsche mechanic (approximately 1000 miles ago in June). Thanks.

A little bit of hot gear oil makes a huge puddle....

Good point. I’ll replace the lost gear oil and see what happens. Thanks.

Should be pretty simple to see where it came from...follow the river to the source.

My 5-speed leak was from the lower diff drain bolt.

Was it leaking at all before? Even a little drip?

As was noted, a little bit of oil makes a big puddle.
The entire contents of the gearbox would make a 'pond', not a 'puddle'.

For a sudden, large leak, my first suspect would be the input shaft seal, or axle seals. Especially with the 'driven hard' part.

But it should be easy enough to find out.

Get the car up in the air and take a look. Big leaks are usually easy to find.

Finally got to my 928 S4 and bad news, I have a crack in my case. What’s the next step?

Post pictures.

Really sorry to hear it, not expecting that at all.

Yes, this is the original transaxle with only 78,000 miles. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I recently had the clutch replaced at a “Porsche” specialist. Is it even possible that they may have caused the case to develop a crack?

It shouldn't have. The 928 clutch is the easiest to replace that I've ever seen.

The trans doesn't need to be dropped, or even moved.

That doesn't mean they didn't do something to cause this, but good luck trying to prove it.

Thanks for your reply. I’m considering rebuilding the unit because I plan to remove the transaxle. Any recommendations where to send the unit?
