OK, if anyone wants the hi-tech solution (and who hasn't been po'd taking those caps off), drill the cap center and weld a nut in place - say 6mm and seal with a short bolt. Threading in a (longer) 6mm bolt (against the axle stub) will gently lift the cap off!! Patent pending.

At the 3rd Quarter, Tools BE Us N' Stuff Stock Holders Meeting it was announced by Executive co-chairs Ed and Garth immediately after the Barbeque and Neked potato sack races that even amidst the prolonged World Economic downturn the multi-national would be posting profits for the 15th consecutive quarter. Announcements were also made from the Zuffenhausen Offices that pre-production sales of the 2010 928 series indicate the third banner year in a row for the once foundering Porsche Marque aquired in May of 2005 for a few Baht on the Euro thru the Mother Company, Wheel Bearing Cap Removal Tool Thingy Investment Corporation.
Zuffenhausen also announced it's commitment to F1 racing and promised that the annual 928 Geriatrics Race at Monte Carlo should be a Hoot.
In other news the vicious rumors of someone digging up the 928 electrical design team for DNA samples have proven false and since there are no living relatives(now) the matter has been closed.
Financial matters put to rest the Shareholders and Executives will attend The Mazola Party. No press will attend though several hundred students from across America representing the Collegeate Spring-Break Commission plan to protest the Mazola Party after last years Caligula-like Debauchery resulting in the 4 day quarentine of Key West, Florida....

These things pissed me off more then most other pieces on the suspension when I took everything off my 89. The whole hub assembly was on my work bench!
And I still couldn't get it off.
So I dremmelled a slit in the side by the actual hub, and pryed and pryed.
So two new caps will be ordered in thier stead.

I just used a screw driver, some WD-40, a hammer, and some time.
Just by hitting on the oppsit sides, agian and again, and again I was able to slowly work the bearing caps out. It was more a matter of time than anything else.

This takes me back a bit. First car I ever touched front hubs on....had screw on alloy caps, with ears to get a purchase on. Under that was the bearing adjustment - a screw on round nut, with 4 holes through it, followed by a washer keyed to slot in stub axle, with 13 holes through it, all locked by a flat washer, castellated nut and split pin. The first two were locked together with a short 1/8" pin, providing for 52 settings, so you could accurately achieve the specified .003-.005" end float measured at the wheel rim outer edge. Showing my age a bit....

Rear fascia off, exhaust dropped, wires traced, leaves raked, heat shields off, trees fertilized & watered,
BUT
Those caps are still in place.
Bought a giant set of Crecent's finest slip-joint pliers -BTW Lowes has those welders clamp pliers for $20.00- the slip joints aren't getting it.
Tried twisting/rotating the cap, wiggling/shifting 90 degrees, and 120 degrees, Same thing with gripping and tapping, NO JOY!
Virbus Units,
All of the above, plus literally hours of tapping.
Might join Brendan with a group purchase.
Area is immaculate, Caps look like they were put on yesterday.
Will try other options tomorrow with a single interuption -V.A. appointment. When all else fails I'll drill a hole and do the slide-hammer thing , then the cut slot and pry method. Less radical stuff first. When I start 'frying' I move on to other things for awhile.
I need these off as I have to remove and repair/replace the rightside upper A arm.

Best thing for this is Liquid Wrench, either spray or squeeze can.
Pick it up after work. Put some on the seam & tap the cap lightly with the hammer. put some more on and tap it again before bed. Tomorrow they'll come right off.
I've done this with rusted air injection fittings on various makes of cars that people swore would never come off. Depending on how stuck they are, they may come off after soaking for an hour or two, but the overnight treatment is a sure thing.
