Lower steering shaft cracked u joint
Porsche must have changed this part, don’t know when. The cracked one is a press fit, the used replacement is one piece.
The story;
Bought the car a couple weeks ago, drove it home about 200 miles with no problems. The steering wheel was not centered when going straight so when I got it home I centered the rack with the alignment mark, disconnected the battery and removed and reset the wheel. I couldn’t find my alignment bolt (thank goodness) so after setting the wheel I got back under to recheck the mark. It was off just a bit, 1/8”, so without starting the car I turned the wheel to center it. As I cranked on the wheel without power steering the wheel suddenly “slipped” about an inch with a ratcheting noise. After a lot of study and checking, I figured out the lower shaft was slipping in the upper u joint. The crack only became visible after starting the car and turning the wheel to full lock.
I don’t know when Porsche redesigned the part, but the replacement is one piece rather than a press fit.
If I had found my alignment bolt I would not have found this until total failure.
Just saying, sometimes absent mindedness is a blessing.
