Here is the next video from the race. It's the drive through the Narrows, the tightest, slowest section of the course. I did have some difficulty while traveling the Narrows, the GPS decided to restart. This is the one that shows the road using data from the previous runs, so is more accurate then the generic maps loading on the GPS. Since I didn't have a navigator to help with the up coming turns it's very necessary at these speeds.


You'll notice I have the speed displayed on the bottom center. This is from the small text displayed by the Garmin Dashcam. I usually use the display from the LM-1 datalog or the video from the camera pointed at the GPSs and auxiliary gauges. On this run that video camera was not recording and the LM-1 log was not very useful. It seems that it was suffering from some of the electrical issues that have been plaguing the car recently.

I had a navigator in 2007, 2008 and 2009 at Pikes Peak in very similar conditions (156 turns in 12 miles, damn hard to memorize) and that didn't work so well, either. Could not hear him over the engine w/race exhaust, even though we had the top-of-the-line headsets from World Rally at the time. So he resorted to hand signals for me, which was at least partially effective. At the end of my third year, I was just starting to feel I could go it alone because I was so familiar with the course and save the 200 pounds of navigator. I'm thinking, with your many years of this race that you must be about there too?

The video was interesting in that something I thought had to be experienced to understand it also applies on video- when one is going flat out in a stock 928 and then slows down to two digits speeds you feel as though you can get out and go for a walk- seems that way on your video. The thing that does not come across is just how close one's visual "far point" seems at those speeds that makes the road seem extremely narrow like threading cotton through a needle.

I finished another video. This is the run on the Speed Trap Straight where they get the official top speed. I included the whole 10 miles of the straight plus some of the curve go into and out of the straight.


The GPS log show that I averaged 204 mph for the final 7.8 miles of the straight, that's over 2 minutes at 200 mph.



I'll do one more video showing the run on the final straight to the finish line.

Forgive me if I missed it in the thread- any sense of oil consumption over the 90 miles this year?

Rob,

I checked the oil after the race (when it cooled down) and it was at the same level as when I started. So I would think that the oil consumption was nil, though I haven't checked my oil breather catch cans yet to see if there was anything there...

Here is my last video from the 2018 SSCC. This is the run to finish line.


Here is the GPS log from the final 4+ miles which shows an average speed of 206 mph for 3.4 miles with a top speed of 213 mph:



The Garmin Nuvi GPS showed a max speed of 214 mph, but that could be a reading of 213.5 rounded up.

which oil control system did you use from Greg ??

Hey Andy,

I have his oil fill baffle and his custom modified cam covers. That with my own modifications to the oil breather system and running a 2.2:1 final drive (88 S4 transaxle) with 26.3" diameter tire seem to have the oil under control so far. Oh and not going high g's in left hand turns.

What RPM are you turning at 200+ mph?

No crank-scrapers. I'm at 5,800 rpm at 200 mph and ~6,200 rpm at 213.

I wondered as I have his oil system that sucks oil off the cam covers and a pump blows it back into the oil pain,,,,,,never burned oil since....love his design......

thanks for sharing your build specifics...... you are a god among 928 rennlisters !!!!!!
