Need some help on where to start on a newly purchased 1985 928. I broke several of the 928 deadly sins by buying one that was cheap, had no service history and I did not get a PPI. In another brilliant decision, I drove it 40 miles across DFW to get it home. I’m very fortunate the engine didn’t give out on me.
I had plans on getting a few things fixed then try to get on Sean’s schedule for a post purchase inspection. However, the more I look over the car, the more I realize there’s no way it needs to be driven without some major work done to it (lots of corrosion, oil leaks, etc). So, for all the brilliant minds out there, where’s the best place to start? Timing belt/water pump and fuel lines? Start there and work my way through the long list of things I know that are wrong with it?

Don't feel bad I bought my 3rd 928 that way (86.5) When landed at my place it did not move until wp/timing belt and as you noted you will find other things needing (cam gears/seals etc.) Lol the list truly does keep going. IF you are lucky you will not find much hatcheting of the wiring. Take your time and you will be greatly pleased with your results. Also welcome to the tank!
Just in general with an S3 like that, if you have no service history, assume timing belt/water pump, engine bay fuel lines and power steering lines are must-fix items, for safety (and preventing engine death) reasons. Depending on where your oil leaks are coming from, it's highly likely you'll find at least some of the sources during that timing belt job.
It got me from point A to point B. Seems to struggle in lower gears. Not much punch to it when it’s moving from a stop.
It’s has at least 198k miles on it (odometer is broken). Can tell it was used as a home to one or more critters at one point because I found their stash of acorn shells.
Here’s what I’ve found wrong with it so far (which excludes deferred maintenance items):
Sluggish in low gears
Fuel and temperature gauges are broken
Odometer is broken
Oil leak(not pictured)
AC blows warm air
Leaky seal somewhere (sunroof?) as the back floor mats are wet
Parking lights don’t work
Lots of corrosion in the engine bay
Drivers seat latch is broken
it's a beautiful color, and the best wheels too - Cup 1's. As for sluggishness, driving typically wakes them up. But yes, you'll have lot's to do. As Tony suggested, read the FAQ sticky thread all the way through at the top of the forum for starters. (leak into cabin is a blocked drain - they are in the rear of the sunroof channels and at the front of each channel)
Yes, you have a lot to do. But, I've seen guys bring back way way way worse 928's than this. You'll be very happy once everything is complete. Take your time and do it or have someone do it, right the first time. Good Luck!
I wouldn't start or drive it till fuel lines are replaced. All fuel lines.
OK, with this purchase, you probably HAVE to do something and can't resist starting it, if only to hear it. Have fire extinguisher close, just a general rule here. With that mileage, it may be on second set of wires, but from the pics, it hasn't been touched lately. Change the plugs, wires, coil wires and distributor wires or at least de-oxit the coil and distrib. connections
In the New Visitor thread is a wealth of info. and in there somewhere are the 3 main vendors most of us recommend: 928gt.com (Dave Roberts), 928srus.com (Roger Tyson) and 928 International. And you already have Sean, as mechanic, not vendor.
