Default Steering wheel will not go back on the steering shaft.

I recently pulled the instrument pod to change some light bulbs and repair the turn signal in my 81' 928. Reassembled instrument panel, pod, and turn signal cluster only to be stumped by the steering wheel not fully slide onto the steering shaft splines. The face steering wheel is flush to the face of the pod. Seems the steering shaft slid back into the steering column. When I pulled the steering wheel off to change my light bulbs and repair, the nut holding the wheel on came off with just a few turns. Didn't think much about it till I noticed grey epoxy on the 27mm nut and the shaft threads. And now only about 1-2 threads are exposed for threading. So, it appears that this has been an issue in the past. Does the steering shaft pull out? Need about 1-1.3 inches for threads to be fully exposed. I do not want to force or damage anything. Has anyone run across this before and if so, what was the fix. Please advise. Attached are photos of my delima.
