Opinions and Insights for a 928S
Hi guys,
I am looking at a 1986.5 928S, 5 spd, with the 60K mile service performed, with an asking price of $39,900. It's being listed at Autokennel.com. From pictures, it looks very well maintained for a 60K miles car. This is the yr that the 928S has the 928 S4 engine (288 hp), I believe, with the S4 brakes and suspension components, but 200 lbs lighter than the S4. I would like to have your opinions as to the asking price. Is it a fair price for this particular example? Thanks for your insights.

I'm not the one to give advice on the car value; but the forum will need pictures/links and the build sheet before you will get a deeper response from the professionals here. JMHO.

#1 - 86.5 has the S4 suspension, brakes & exhaust. But not the motor. It has the S3 motor with the "pipe organ" intake, same as the 86 & 85 (US version). 288hp is the book rating. S4 had 316.
#2 - What does the "60k mile service" mean? Timing belt & water pump? What about an intake refresh? What about the motor mounts & oil pan gasket? No matter the miles, some stuff ages with time and this car is 30+ years old. The overall service history is important. How often was the oil changed? Coolant? Brake fluid?
#3 - Even for a 'very nice' 86.5. $40k is kinda high. Especially with 60k miles on it.

from the ad I would say its an above average machine and you should get it sooner than later,
it has just about the best bones of any car I have seen.
and its been used so its not a garage queen.
It might require some catch up stuff but its in driving condition now so ....

This is Mark Anderson's (of 928 International fame) car. Great color combo. It's probably the best condition 86.5 5-speed in that color in existence. So if it's the color you want then it's probably worth the price.

For clarification, and contrary to the ad, the car does not have "staggered wheel sizes".
Who is that behind the wheel in the picture? Looks a bit like Derek Bell. Looks like a fantastically clean car!

I agree with Stan, if an 86.5 is what you want (and I had one myself - certainly best of breed cars), this is one of the ones to grab now. The other is BC's car, which is guards red over tan, a complete resto job, but going for considerably more. $40K for the subject car is not out of line at all.

The price is above market, and the car is definitely above market condition. It looks to me a car which anyone could hop in, and drive and enjoy for years, and years with only regular 928 mx. It is a special color, and although the int is original, it's been kept up well, indicating a lot of years inside a garage.
If it hit all my buttons, I would offer something less and see where it goes. Nothing wrong with haggling on a very narrow market vehicle. There will likely be no one clamoring to buy it except a very select few people who are looking for that product.
I would say out the door around $33-36k would be a good result all around.

I personally inspected this car for Mark prior to his purchase since it was local to me. It was winter in northern Wisconsin so I opted not to start or drive it.
It's everything as described in the description if not better.
A true survivor that belongs in a collection that will preserve the prominence it currently has. If this car were to go across the right live auction block, I feel this price would be an opening bid.
The only way this car will not appreciate greatly in value is a worldwide market crash.
The only 86.5 on the same level as this one I can think of for a comp is the one BC sold in 2016 (sold again this year for a similar price):

Thanks everyone for your input. Moving closer to adding this to the stable. Hopefully I will be able to obtain this fine example and enjoy it. Does anyone have experience with AutoKennel and how negotiable the prices are with their cars?
