Thanks for the pics. I always wanted to get to that part of the world. This may be as close as I get.

I thought Skyfall was blown up in the movie together with a 928 [the DB5 was fudged in]?

Very nice pics and Scotland is a great place to go touring. I once did a day trip on my BSA 650 Rocket Gold Star back in about 1974 starting from Saltcoats, up to Gourock, on the ferry to Dunoon, skirting the Holy Loch, Loch Fyne, up to Arrochar, across to Loch Lomond and down its west coastline to Tarbet- nearly ended up in the Loch on one bend! Then across the Erskine Bridge back down into Ayrshire. I also visited Edinburgh the following day- crossed the Forth Road Bridge just for the sake of it- doing 70 mph when the warning signs cautioned about cross winds recommending a speed limit of 40 mph- a gust of wind hit me and before I knew what had happened I had gone from the inside lane to the extremity of the outside lane- scared me sh*tless- did the rest of the bridge [and back] at walking pace!

Would dearly like to do your trip in my 928 but 4k miles to get there is a bit much-enjoy! Excellent thread.

Rgds

Thats some trip on a BSA, worthy of a medal!

I have loved this trip, which was undertaken to test the car properly after all the work. I have covered 850 miles so far but probably the the equivalent of 4000 motorway miles given the style of roads.

I am amazed at it has never bottomed out once on roads basically only fit for a land rover. I did get a few funny looks arriving at some car parts full of 4WDs

Well the trip is complete and we made it home after an epic 1020 mile trip on some of the most scenic roads you can imagine.

So how did the extended test go?

Well the 928 handled the trip well given it is more suited to autobahns than single track Scottish country roads.

Surprisingly I didn’t bottom out the front once on the journey, this was one of my main concerns given some of the roads.

The journey was very comfortable and the car suggests we managed 26 mpg although I have not done a separate calculation.

There are 3 things the test showed up
I would prefer a higher rate of damping for the suspension, it’s a little on the soft side resulting in a faster rebound and compression than I would like
There is a trans fluid leak coming from the back, not sure what it is as I have not had a chance to stick my head under - I will reported back
The sealant supplied with the manifold spacers failed resulting in an air leak into one of the plenums. The tell tale sign was 2 dribbles of liquid down two of the manifold runners coming from the plenum. This made the car run lean and stumble on part throttle. I didn’t like the sealant supplied by 928 motorsport when I applied it and have now replaced it with a sealant which sets but remains flexible (locktite blacktite)

This sealant failure could have had more serious consequences had detonation been occurring.
I did some on the spot shark tuning when this started to happen to compensate with the fuelling although this resulted in an overall rich running.

Thankfully after replacing the sealant the engine is running probably better than with the old sealant bringing me to the conclusion that there was some small leak to begin with. When inspecting the joint with the end cap off there were multiple holes through the sealant which had developed - not good.

I would recommend anyone running this sealant to change it.

With this change I expect the next round of Shark Tuning to correct the fuelling due to fixing an air leak.

Beautiful pictures and countryside! In my head I'm hearing Elgar's pomp & circumstance #4..... Forgive me if I missed it, had you dynoed the car +/- the manifold spacers? There's always been some question about their value.

Hi

Dyno is in the plan once I have done more Shark Tuning. I am hoping to do it in October assuming I get time to work on the ST.

As little as they may add I thought they were worthwhile in deshrouding some of the bell mouths which are close to the cover. They also allow you to smooth the mounting lip quite a bit which is a sharp obstacle very close to the bell mouths

Beautiful pics Marti. I'm glad you reported your issue with the Permatex we supply with our intake plenum spacers. I'm happy to change products to a better one. Let me know how the Loktite Blacktite performs on the dyno, please.

If you ever go to Scotland I suspect that appreciation of the theme music from Braveheart might go down better with a Scotsman!

I guess the Proclaimers' I'm Gonna Be (500 miles) would have been a better soundtrack, yes.

Well they hail from Edinburgh!

At least you did not pick P&C No1 "Land of Hope and Glory" .With Brexit looming all we have is hope and not much of that!

It is sad that the union did not go down the right path for us (UK) but with every cloud there is a silver lining. We get to make up our own trade unions for our own prosperity as opposed to having to some mongrel offering from an impossibly large committee which is trying to satisfy 29 political views.

It wont change who we are at the end of the day.

I would go for ‘Scotland the brave’ - it’s hardly ever sung but has great lyrics for the music
