Default Front seat question, i think these are not original?

Hi everybody,

Got a question, my red '79 euro 5 speed is completely original (I got the birth certificate) but there is a question that I have been wondering about for years. I think I do not have the original front seats in the car. I think it are 924 or 944 seat actually. I will contact the Belgium dealership if they know about the history but I was wondering if people know that the car was also delivered with these seats or that somewhere during its live got swapped with these.

They look to be later 944 seats. We have seen some odd examples of ROW 928s coming with seats similar to early 944 but seat back release and shape of the seatback tells me that they are 85 and up and would not have been around when your 79 was built

They look original, but those are not 928 seats. Could be 944 or 924 seats

some of the Euro versions had lower spec seats VS the USA cars,
and based on the seat coverings for the front and rears and that they match,
these seats look to be original to the period and the car

Okay, I'll throw my guess in. I think they are from an early 80's 911. The seats pictured here (Porsche replacement upholstery) are from an 83 944. Notice how the headrest section is not fabric and they have a different fabric to vinyl / leather junction shape at the front of the lower seat panel. I don't believe seats with the patterns shown were offered in the 944. Also, I would expect early 928 seats to have a push button back release.
Great luck with your search afwiw… they look nice regardless.

I am going to side with Mr Merlin on this one. I have seen alot of Euro cars and these could very well be original.

FWIW, I have never see any seats shaped like that stock in a 928, but I haven't seen them all.:-) Fabric like that yeah, many times on 928 seats. And yes the fabric matches front to back, but the styles of upholstery are different front to back, look at the normal tucks/rolls on the rear seat and look at the different style on the front ones. I have no doubt those are Porsche seats, just need to see more than one of those in a 928 to think it could have come that way on purpose. Of course it is Porsche, and someone could have custom ordered it with 911 seats because they have them in their 911, or heck, Franz could have grabbed the wrong seats on the line, who the frack knows!!

But, who doesn't like a good mystery!

Happy Saturday,

Dave

Those seats look pretty much identical to my 1987 924S seats. Mine have a slightly different fabric but asides from that they're the same.

Cheap seats were used in '80-82 MY 4.5L ROW cars to keep cost down. It was possible to get normal seats for extra cost. There were other cost cutting done to those same cars like no storage box between rear seats.

Alex (VanD)'s silver ROW has those seats but with white pascha fabric. Stan is correct that some ROW OBs had "lower costs" 911 seats instead of the luxurious 928 seats!

I had those identical seats in one of my 1979 911 SC's. I sold them to someone at a swap meet at the old PCNA headquarters in Orangeburg NY back in 1986. The buyer was from overseas. I can't imagine they are the same pair but that would be wild if they were. No doubt 911 and not 928 seats but they do match the rears.

This comes up from time to time. The manual 911 seats were sometimes used in early 928's as a cost-saving measure, and given the quality and fact that they match and use Porsche fabric, they're original to the car.

You'll find threads about it including pictures of original cars - IIRC Hacker has some great pics he's posted before.
