Gosh, people should have bought 928 Shop Manuals instead of High Tech stock...

Porsche has priced WSM into the stratosphere hoping to send 928
owners to dealership service.
Nice sentiment.

Would those 928 factory trained mechanics at the Porsche dealerships
please stand up.

Ernest (NYC)
If I brung my 928 to the local dealership, will they ask me to pop the
rear hatch so they can check the oil.
At least with the Cayenne they'll stock spark plugs in 8-packs.

So are we looking at the liklihood of workshop manual rentals? Maybe talk local library into including this in their great works literature???

There was a day when the ghastly timing belt tensioner tools would be rented out at a fair price.

I would prefer to have this on CD rom anyway.

I wonder if Porsche mechanics really want to work on this car.

James Erdman mentioned that very little of his factory tech training will be on the 928 series.

I just don't see Porsche trying to drive the 928 back to the dealer shop.

I do see a benefit to Porsche in letting the 928 support be a cottage industry and through getting WSM's and parts lists to the mainstream, more Porsche 928 parts will be sold. Porsche is making a big mistake by withholding 928 WSM's or pricing them at these high amounts.

I purchased 10K worth of some specialized equipment for my business 5 years ago. As the equipment began to fail, I contacted the company for service. I was told they stopped servicing these units and no factory support was available, but new units could be bought for around 12K. Boy, was I pissed. Refusing to replace my merely 5 year old units., I rebuilt and re-calibrated them myself and still use them today with no problem. I doubt I'll buy from those jokers again. 5 years support? thanks but no thanks.

The 928 community is in the same boat. Wer'e good at maintaining the 928 series with or without Porsche's support. The WSM CD will become the grassroots way of continuing 928 upkeep just like the Kempf tool.

Before I jump on the band wagon, I can't help but wonder if they added more information and corrected all the mistakes.

Hell as far as we know they may be of higher quality. Those who have the Porsche WSM know what I'm talking about! The originals I have are nothing like the ones I had for the 944 or the 924. At least they had colored wire diagrams and fair pic's!

I wish they did them like Mercedes Benz! I have all the information for the W123-W126 on Factory CD's that are HTML/Flash driven and the files are already in PDF format.

I've always woundered why car companys don't put their obslete mannuals out in the public domain.

Lets say you've got a car model, for example the Ford Escort. Your compitishion has already gotten a hold of the mannual, and reverse engineered anything intersting, and probably alought of things not intersting for good measure. I don't know what would be intersting about a Ford Escort, but we'll assume there is something.

Now, it's expensive to train techs. to work on the old, obslete cars. Infact, most of the owners can't afford those techs now anyways. The only way that those old cars will be maintained is if the owners service them.

The information you have in the WSM is vital to serviceing the cars. If the owners have it, they're happy as a lark, and as they move up in the world, would be very happy to buy a new car from you. This is good right?

Well, your makeing negiglable income off of the sale of the Service mannuals, so why not put them in the public domain. Expecaly today with the internet and digital copying, every owner will be able to afford on, regardless of his budget for the car. That keeps your sale of parts up, which helps you get rid of your stockpile, and it cements your brand into their hearts. How can this be a bad thing?

Instead Porsche seems to be squeezing the old marks for every penny they can get. That seems like shooting yourself in the foot.

Nicole,

The first one is Mitchell repair data. I have it. It's certainly no replacement for the factroy WSM. It's on par with Haynes or Chilton's manuals, in my opinion.

I remember reading that one of the Australian club members had generated a postscript printer file for the shop manual. I'm not too familiar w postscript but supposedly this made it easier to have the file printed.

If you're very patient you can copy the hard copy or print from the CD. I think the total page count is around 2500 or so. The biggest problem is the wiring diagrams for '87 (from memory, could be earlier) on where the pages are 22 1/4 or so by 11 1/2. When I wanted a backup copy of my hardcopy for the car, I paid about $1 a sheet and not all shops could do it.

It would be great if someone could offer hardcopy, maybe w an option of just one or two years worth or wire diagrams, but I'd be very careful about advertising....I know that they have monitored ebay in the past (Jana seems to be "off" for the early part of the New Year so you'll see some manual CDs there).

At any rate, $1200 is a real slap in the face. Worst part is that there are a lot of people who don't know about rennlist, don't use ebay, and they'll end up paying it or, worse, not maintaining their cars....more sources for Mark and 928 Intl I guess.

Our office printer prints 60 PPM double sided, punches holes automatically and sorts the job per volume. It scales pictures to size and costs us 1.4 cent per page.
If there wasn't the legal issue, I'd love to print out some manuals...
Cheers,
Sab.

Hey Sab, You could make a few volumes and give them to some Rennlisters. I am sure the Rennlisters would have no problem "Donating some NON TAX CLAIMED" money to your "Save the 928 fund".

JM, I am sure if you obtained a current WSM and made some available that people would surely acquire this from you.

Not for nothing. I am now going to spend several thousand on a trans and service for this car and especially after reading this thread I seriously am asking myself "why". I am a working class shmo that was looking for a taste of one of the finer things in life and now this slap in the face with a F.U. right after it makes the more sensible side of me want to say F.U. right back. I am still asking myself why fix a car that I will not get even remotely any of my money back. Porsche is not at all concearned with the backing of their product but only the depth of one's pockets. Henry Ford said it best " I will make an automobile that ANYONE can afford". A man for the deep and shallow pockets. Makes me wonder if I am supporting the wrong company. Just my 3 cents worth of crap.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for getting that instrument cluster to me. After I bust it down, clean it, then test it, I will be looking into gauge faces.

I made my last set myself, however the car is long sold. I wish I were still in contact with the current owner to see how they held up.

Best regards,
Mike

PS: I'm trying to send you good vibes on your tranny!

Joe,
an obvious answer perhaps but you just have to ask yourself if the enjoyment you get out of the car is worth the $ and/or time you know you're going to have spend....forget supporting Porsche, brand loyalty, etc...they could care less apparently and that shouldn't be any surprise. Fortunately we've got the big 3 as well as enterprising individuals who have found ways to get around expensive parts (like the belt tension tool) so I don't envision parts becoming a nightmare soon...sure hope I'm right. To me,it's all about smiles per $ and I haven't found anything automotive that beats my 928's (I got the deerslayer back from my son...'82 5 spd).

Jim
