Door Sills
My annual roadworthy inspection (MOT) is due so I left the car with Paul Anderson to fix a few minor issues.

I'm sure I can reasonably assume I'm not unique in having this problem. What I'd like to know is what everyone else does when confronted with this rot. |
Wow, that looks nasty. Have yet to see one even close to that.

That doesn’t look cheap, the S4 plastic bits obviously trapped the water and salt, there’s only so much galvanizing can protect. |

I've yet to see them rot so badly. But I live in an area that rarely rains, let alone coat the roads in anything.
I'm sure you can get donor panels from one of many parts cars. I'm sure Porsche will put them back into production if there is enough demand for them in the classics department. Which I'm sure will be sooner rather than later with the rising values of these old beasts. |
OUCH. as a UK resident S4 owner: what were the clues that made you suspect there was a problem ( I just want to avoid stripping off the plastic covers to check mine.).

Hi Peter,
Several years ago my handbrake wasn't responding as expected and it turned out the support mechanism was completely rusted through. Paul had to cut out a fairly large section of the floor to repair it. At the time he suggested a closer inspection of typical rust areas might be appropriate on my next visit. Unfortunately I decided to go for a cheap respray in the meantime - cheap because the body shop didn't bother to look for rust by removing trim, bumpers etc but simply sprayed over everything as it was. Result - out of sight out of mind. At my recent service for the MOT, Paul noticed the handbrake repair and remembered my rust saga. He says he's had a few incidences of rusty door sills recently and thought it worth a look. You can only speculate how many of us are blissfully oblivious of this deceptively hidden defect. Glyn |

Peter have a good look around the jack points on the floor side not covered. If you can see rust in this area I would suggest removing the sill covers to check further. This area gives the first sign of potential issues although is unlikely to actually have visible holes around them. |
