Default Blind Spot and Passenger Side View Mirror Question

Now that my 928 has been running trouble free this whole summer I'm starting to address smaller items. One is the passenger's side view mirror's lack of blind spot coverage. It's really bad on my car. Here is a picture from my commute to work today while at a stop light. I positioned the car on my right intentionally in my blind spot. After moving the mirror all the way to the right I only could see just a little of that cars rear fender. The red Chevy is actually the car behind the one in my blind spot.

So my question is, is this normal for a 1984 928? The mirror is totally flat and thus has a very narrow field of view. There also is no "objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear" labeling. Again not sure if that is normal for an '84? I found this picture of an 84's side view mirror that did have the warning. Is that an aftermarket mirror?

Here is a picture of an '85 and it does not have the warning.

Compare the movement range between your two mirrors. They should be the same.

I would hazard a guess that your right-side mirror has been replaced.

Last, are you taller than about 6’3”?

Just checked. They are the same. I'm 6' 1". With the mirror adjusted that far out I can't see any of the side of my own car, as in the case of every other car I've ever driven with passenger side view mirrors after adjusting for the blind spot. I am thinking you are correct. At some point maybe the mirror was replaced and maybe with a RHD driver's side mirror since it is a flat mirror. I'll have to check with our suppliers for a correct replacement.

I think, but am not sure, that you are familiar with the correct way to adjust side view mirrors (https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...id-blind-spots) and that you shouldn't be able to see the sides of your own car?

In any case, I think that at 5'13" you should be able to yaw the right-side mirror sufficiently to cover the blind spot but you will not be able to see the right side of the car (even with an objects-are-closer-than-they-appear mirror.)

I had the same problem on my 85. Do a search, you can find an aftermarket replacement mirror for about $20. Do yourself a favor and just adhere it to the existing mirror, don't take it apart and swap out the glass like I did:/

Huh. I guess I've been driving too many SUVs and pick-up trucks. I honestly don't adjust my other cars' mirrors out that far. I'm more like figure 5 but can see the whole car (I think. Will need to check again). Regardless, you can see in my first picture that with my 928 mirror adjust all the way out you can't see the front of the car in my blind spot. And that picture was taken at my eye level and head position.

All in all this is not a big issue since I am used to turning my head. I just like the idea of having my car setup the way it left the factory (for good or bad). And if it is supposed to have a convex side mirror, then by golly I think I want one.

Like I mentioned above, I don't view it as a problem per se. I am just trying to determine if that is normal or not. Sounds like on your car it was the same way as mine, so maybe that's just how the early cars were?

I came to think that the flat mirror was a safety hazard for me (1987), so I got a convex version on EBay. We are all so used to the “objects are ...” view, I needed the opposite warning. I took the easy path and used the adhesive tape to put it. It fell off within a year. I found a whole mirror unit with a convex glass piece, and did a swap - just the mounted glass piece. It was helpful to have a detached mirror to figure out the secret to get the mirror part out. It helps to move the mirror all the way out (or was it in? Or up?).

I have flat mirrors on both sides (85 Euro).
I'm pretty sure they are original.

You can get stick on 'spot' mirrors at most car parts stores. I prefer the little rectangular ones. This is representative:

I've run those on my flat drivers side mirrors on several cars I've owned.

The no blind spot mirror adjustment method is the way to go. Once you get accustomed to it, you'll wonder why you ever thought seeing the side of the car was necessary.
