Default How-dy, Fellow 928 Rennlisters!

I just signed up for a membership, so I wanted to introduce myself. 'Been lurking around for a while, trying to get the information to get the motivation to start working on my 1979 5 speed shark. It has been stored in my garage for something like 20 years!! Well, the work has begun and so, I will soon start leaning on your collective wisdom to try and navigate what will surely be some turbulent waters. No pun intended, as in shark/waters?
I am a fairly proficient diy and other than not having a car lift, my tool and equipment arsenal is quite extensive, although the only 928 specific equipment I've got are the Porken lift bars (*****)

Here is the shark, taken out for a wash last summer, after 20 years or so. Wasn't a good idea. Given it was not driven, the brake rotors developed surface oxidation. Nothing damaging but looked bad. Had to clean them up. Definitely not worth the hassle.

I wasn't concerned about keeping it original early on. Luckily, the mods can be undone without a lot of fuss, if I ever wanted to go back

Cleaned up! All the Koni shocks have about 2500 miles of use. Can not remember if I changed the springs also. The rotors were replaced at the same time, as well as a thicker stabilizer bar. 1 1/8" (30 or 32mm), I think.

The P7s were given a literal bath in the 303 restorer. Probably 2500 miles on them.

But will they still work...

. My experience is mostly with Chrysler and Ford vehicles, as in cars, trucks, and Jeeps, so your help will be most appreciated.

As you can see, the shark is in exceedingly good shape. The interior is in as good or better condition than the exterior. Will post some pictures later.
So, the adventure begins... Later.

Wow, can't wait to see more. Also, are those P7's original? How many miles are on the car?
As to restoration, I would delete the spoiler. 79's had no spoiler at all, and as you likely know already, that spoiler is from an S4, from 87 onward.

Great starting point - no rub strips or sunroof? It won't be easy to fix the holes used to attach the wing, so I think you're stuck with it. We're not yet at a point where originality is hugely important to the market - it's up to you. Some really like a "smooth" car, regardless of the originality factor.

Traction from 20-year-old tires will not be good. You can be disciplined about taking corners too fast, but don't forget about reduced braking distance. You never know when you might encounter a fallen tree on a dark and stormy night, as I did a few years ago.

You're in a good state for 928s. Good luck.

Welcome aboard. Nice car. Was it running when you parked it? Have you been regularly turning the engine over?

Nice car. Now add your location and your year model car to your signature in Rennlist so we all will know exactly what car you are asking questions about and where you are. Someone might be close to you with what you need.

Beautiful car! Nice to see goof looking P7's, however I can not imagine they are safe to use. I am anxious to follow your progress. I would check the potentially catastrophic wear items first such as : the two fuel lines that run under the coolant reservoir, the high pressure power steering fluid line and brake lines. I hope the old coolant hasn't rotten away the aluminum. I love the silver and I am sure I speak for everyone when I say "we need interior and under hood pictures. Also add a "signature" to your posts that always shows what year your car is. and what transmission you have so people can steer you in the right direction when you have any questions Welcome MARS928

Default Thank you!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I very much appreciate your encouragement. Here a list of answers to the questions, in no particular order:

“Also, are those P7's original? How many miles are on the car?
As to restoration, I would delete the spoiler. 79's had no spoiler at all, and as you likely know already, that spoiler is from an S4, from 87 onward.”

The car has 89xxx miles. The P7s (new) were put on about 2500-3000 miles before it was parked and it was running without any issues at the time. And regrettably, no, I did not turn the car over in all that time. I am heartened by the condition of the oil as seen in the picture below. I also removed the plugs and used a color inspection camera and the cylinder walls looked great. I poured some Mystery oil in the cylinders and will let it soak for a while before a try to turn it with a wrench.

I put on the spoiler myself early on. I got the car around 1984-85. Can’t remember for sure. I never thought that I would still have it all these years later or that it would have been better to keep it original. As was mentioned, it would be difficult to repair the holes if I remove the spoiler. If it becomes an issue in my mind, I can always look for another hatch.

As can be seen in a picture below, no rub strips or sunroof! I totally agree with the assessment of the tires. I will probably run them to test the car out. The rubber is not at all hard, looks like any of my other vehicles, but I am sure there is unseen deterioration. To give you all an idea of the storage conditions, I removed the gas tank and when I disconnected the hose to the fuel pump, I was astounded that (stale) fuel poured out! I was expecting a gooey mess. The inside of the fuel tank was as the tank of any working vehicle would be. No varnish, just a little liquid old gas. I will be asking for advice regarding that endeavor as there are
issues, but wanted to mention this as I am still amazed about its condition.

I have been reading the forum for a while, so yes there is a lot to be concerned about regarding the condition of
40-year-old parts, especially the ones mentioned. Had not thought about the potential for the aluminum to rot away. Ouch! I will definitely be posting pictures of the interior. It is the one place that has been receiving love over the years. It is a 5 speed. When I was looking for a 928, I was looking for a Metal Gun Gray and the only one I found was an automatic but I was dead set on a 5 speed above all else. As they say, the rest is history.
I bought the car when I was living in So Cal, as I grew up there and now I am in the far southwest corner of Texas, in the city of El Paso.

“You never know when you might encounter a fallen tree on a dark and stormy night, as I did a few years ago.” I wish. With an average yearly rainfall average of 10” there is no chance of that! But I know what you mean.

I added a signature information in the CP. I wonder if it will show up in future posts.

About the no rub strips/no sunroof. No beef with them, it is what it is.

20 year-old oil. Really?

Replaced the hood pad. Cleaned up the underside while I was at it.

Condition of the plugs.

Probably not too many of these around, especially the warranty book.

This can only be of interest to a 928 addict. Are you in? First sold 12-28-1978

Again, thank you all very much for the warm welcome.

Mario

How about a road trip the first weekend in November to Marble Falls? The Third Coast GTG is the first weekend in November would be a great opportunity to meet up with other 928 enthusiasts. Folks drive from all over and it's a really good time.

Go to the Third Coast event sticky at the top of this forum to get hotel details.

Hopefully we will see you there.

Hello John, thanks for the heads up. My 928 is not in running condition, after its long slumber. November seems like a long time from now, we'll see what happens. My 12 and 13-year-old girls take up a lot of my time with their endless school activities, as well as other commitments, so it will depend on what issues I run into with the shark.
Cheers!

Wow, car is in great shape.
BTW, the tire on that emergency tire may not be a spare after all that time.
Ask me how I know! So inflate and check it or else throw a can of goo in there too.

Congratulations and welcome.
