Fred,
After looking at all he pics, I still think it is the wiring harness for the Tire Pressure Monitoring system. Do you know if it has been removed or is it still there, just unplugged?
If there it may have been unplugged and rerouted wonky, The only other harness like that one there if I recall is the ABS computer.
Figuring that larger harness out and then cleaning up the door harness stereo wiring should get you back to looking right.
Hope that helps,
Dave

Dave & Dave,
The TPMS on this car was disabled yonks ago before I even purchased the car, that or it was disabled as I purchased the car and set it up. How it was disabled I do not know but I taught the local agents how to disable the system on my late S4 when I first fitted the wider wheels.
Over that system had a lot of problems and the only way they could get the alarm to go quiet was to put silly high pressures in the rear tyres. Someone on the list posted how to defeat the system with a jumper and it never squeaked again. I do not remember asking the agents to disable this system and when I acquired the vehicle it was still running the stock wheels so I assume it was already disabled- whether they did such the way I showed them I have no idea.
I need to take a closer look at what is present- maybe all it needs is some sleeving but it sure looks untidy as it is.

Here is a pic of the RDK wiring (and, if you look closely, a $2k example of how NOT to bypass RDK.) The RDK connector is architecturally identical to the other ECU connectors (e.g. LH, ABS/PSD, EZK) and isn't - it seems - like the thing dangling on your left knee.

The connector body in your picture looks exactly like the connector body in RE's pic of the pod-less '91. I will make a small bet on relocation of the connector for reasons unknown. Verification would require pod removal.

I'll take another squint tomorrow if the humidity permits! The only folks who worked on the car before I acquired it were the local dealers- the car belonged to the owner of the local dealership..

Took a closer loo at the wiring and noted that there is a large connector just out of sight. Inspection of the wiring diagrams suggests the connector must be T23 that carries cables to/from the ABS unit. I cannot see or feel where these cables end up so I suspect that someone was playing around in that vicinity and simply did not push this part of the loom back up where it should be. I do not like the idea of pushing cables blindly into a space I cannot see/feel relying on brute force. Removing the knee bolter may help a little and I suspect the dash panel/cowel may need to come off to be able to work out how to reposition. Pity I did not fathom this out when I had the dash out earlier!
