Default Early Trumpet Horns

I may have killed a set.

They came off an 80, and were wired in series.

I put them in my 87, and in a hurry wired them like the 87 horns were, in parallel.

Nothing...no noise.

So I opened one up all very clean, nice fresh smell of burnt electronics..you know that smell, that "ya ****ed up" smell...

Should these have been wired in series??

Or were they destined to die.

1980 Horns are wired in parallel. The smoke was already on the way out.

Odd, because the car they came off of, + went in one horn then to the other horn, and then - back to harness from there.

Yep. That's parallel. Had they been in series, the wire would have gone to one horn only, then another wire from the other terminal would have gone to the other horn, and the second terminal on that horn would have been grounded.

Take a look at the 1980 wiring diagram to see how it was originally configured.

?? Take a look at the horns, and see if they are rated for 6 Volts. Had they been "borrowed" from an early-mid 60's Porsche or VW car, the two 6 Volt horns would be wired in series in the 12 Volt installation. It's a stretch, but crazier retrofits have been done in the past.

I threw them away already..but Im CERTAIN they were in series.

Oh well, ordered replacements from 928intl...and will hook them up induvidually to both sets of 12v wires in there.

Doesnt seem to be a polarity.

Just to make sure use the DVM to test for a ground path for either connector on the new set,
if one is shorted to ground then you know what to do
