Default Porsche 928 S4 Luggage/Cargo Cover Color

What color should a 1989 928 S4 luggage/cargo cover be for a red car with tan interior?

All tan? Or black quarters with champagne or cashmere rugs? If the latter it’s black. If the former it’s usually black.

Black doesn’t reflect off the rear glass the way lighter colors will in the sun.

If you would like a recommendation for where to purchase a cargo cover, I had a cargo cover made for my 89 S4 by:

schnellekurve@t-online.de
Contact: Sandra
Location: near Stuttgart

Sandra hand makes each one to look like the factory cover and the price includes the mounting hardware.
She sent me swatches to choose from (cloth, leather or alcantara) in the color I needed (burgundy....not an easy color to match!). After ordering it on a Friday she had it completed and shipped by Monday.
I wanted something as close to original as I could get. FYI, The original stretch fabric is no longer available.

She was awesome to work with and I highly recommend her. She responds to emails immediately…considering the time zone difference. If you email her she can send you sample pics of her work.

The original may be NLA but this stuff is a pretty good facsimile:

i can safely say that I’ve never seen a cargo cover in neoprene as shown in your link. Mine was redone by a then-local friend who took it on as a challenge. She found a partial bolt of the correct fabric as an end lot at a local supplier. The original vinyl edging was carefully unstitched, then hand sewn to the new material through the original holes. Original zipper the same. It’s a Work of Art! I mentioned that there are others who would love have one and that all 928 owners are well funded and appreciate the workmanship. Not a chance! First was a challenge she said. After that it’s an ordeal. She’s in elder care now and doesn’t know anybody anymore. Stubborn/determined Hungarian woman who escaped to the U..S after the war because her dad was a scientist/engineer. Sad to see the rapid deterioration.

Thanks. I since found out tan/caramel was not a color available for covers in '87-'91, so mine would be black, And yes, my car has black inside rear quarters, dash and part of the door panels.

Thanks a bunch for the referral to Sandra. We have communicated, she seems great, her covers look good and I expect to be ordering a black cover from her.

FYI, we can still get the Genuine originals from Porsche. Just got one for a guy a few months ago.

Cheers,

Dave

If the hatch covers are available, why can't we find the material?

Just asking.

I think the original material is a double knit Ponte di Roma, but have never found it in a heavy enough weight.

Really? You never cease to amaze me.

Are there ANY details about these cars that you don't know?

Anderson had a trashed one, so I sent a square of the fabric to my fabric-whisperer aunt-in-law, who has been a costume designer in Hollywood for 40 years. Ponte Di Roma was her diagnosis- she pointed out how it's stretchy in both directions, but much more in one than the other. I need to cut out a 1/10 of a square yard of the stuff from a junked one and measure the weight accurately to get a sense of what we're looking for weight-wise.

The original Porsche cargo cover material was called "Trevira CS", a special knit-woven-cloth made of polyester.

It's flame retardant - makes perfect sense.
