Stan - Nice to know Bonehead has a lot of experience with 928 intakes. "Porsche Silver" and clear is what I had the shop order. Both the silver and clear were from Prismatic Powders. I'm assuming all the problems with the result were bad prep and technique. Do you recommend a different brand?

Mrmerlin 07-22-2018 09:41 PM

I would suggest a different vendor,
Bonehead uses a PC that looks great and holds up

got more done today I took the heads out and used a whole can of brake cleaner on the oil galleys of each head along with compressed air,
they got them pretty clean I used a plastic tray to catch the runoff to see how much dirt came out and it had a few small shards of the head cutting,
other than that , only residual oil dirt and not much of that.
I put the HG up to the head to see where the welding areas are and most of the welding appears to be outside the fire rings,
some of the welds have porosity holes after cutting,
my plan is to use some JB weld marine epoxy to fill these in prior to installing the heads.

Got the oil pump and tensioner rebuilt, water pump installed so its starting to look like an engine again

Got the care package from the West coast,
Rob assisted me in getting the parts plated,
they look like jewelry, so nice to see parts that look better than new,
my mom came over and put on a few of the hose clamps on her fingers and was flicking them in the sun..

Shawn Stanford 08-07-2018 09:46 AM

This thread is like my 928 life in a nutshell...

Stan: "I just bought this complete basket case for $5. Bones look pretty good. Now I'll just pull apart the motor and put it back together with my eyes closed and one foot tied behind my back. Oh, look! There it goes on BaT for $50,000!"

Shawn: "I just bought this semi-good Shark from $$$. Let me try to tighten a screw after referencing three manuals, two YouTube videos, and three Rennlist threads. Oh, look! I just broke the whole daggone car!"

If I wasn't a pretty good coder I think I'd just throw myself off a bridge. I'd drive myself off that bridge, but I'm not sure my car could make it.

As usual beautiful work Stan!

Looking good Stan.

Hey thanks Shawn, Tracy and Sean,
I got the engine put back together yesterday evening,
as the sun was going down I fired it up.

The engine fired right up after precharging the fuel lines for leaks.
quite a bit of lifter noise but that went away after about 2 mins of idling.

BUT imagine my chagrin when the same running issues were present,
the engine would start right up and idle smoothly,
as soon as the TPS was moved the engine would die.

If I very slowly opened the throttle it would sometimes slowly accelerate then at about 3400 RPM,
the engine would start misfiring and bucking,
sometimes it would catch and go past this speed but mostly it would backfire and stall.

After all of the things I found broken and fixed I still didnt eradicate the problem.
Since it was dark I had to let it rest for the night,
but I was thinking I guess I didnt fix all of the broken parts and I was bummed.

This morning I found my spare set of computers that came from the Fire the Chauffeur car and plugged them in
I plugged in Both the LH and EZK.
NOTE the PO had said that the computers and the MAF had been rebuilt ,
and now my guess is that the Hall sensor and knock sensor wires might have been shorting to ground as well as the ICV was frozen.
This could have damaged the computers.
All of this contributing to the running issues.

Anyway,
I Connected the battery and hit the key ,
it started and stumbled pretty well for about 30 seconds, and generally sounded pretty bad,
then all of a sudden the idle went smooth,
so I let it run like this for a bit then mover the throttle and the engine accelerated pretty well so I have a bad LH computer,
this is good news.
So the project will continue,
Some engine bay pictures to follow

Mrmerlin 08-10-2018 10:25 PM

Well i got the engine running pretty well,
the original LH was bad even though it was a rebuilt unit.

NOTE the rest of the intake systems must be in good condition before putting a new part like a computer into place or you can damage it.
I also found a bogus voltage regulator and it was running at 18.6 volts,
so I swapped in a Bosch regulator and she runs at 14.0.
I am just about done in the engine bay,
getting ready to gut the interior and rehab the dash pod and the carpets.
The engine sounds mean with the GT resonators and the RMB it has a nice low growl .

Hi Stan

that 18V+ can easily explain the brain damage. From feeble memory the components tend to be 15V rated. John Speake or Rich Andrade can share better info I’m sure. 18 Volts is too high. Good find on that before you sacrificed the new boxes.

Well its been a while just got the car back from the PDR guy,
its just amazing what can be done with skilled hands.

The engine runs really strong and the trans is shifting great,
the whole drive line is quiet smooth and nice.

The brakes work great as does the new steering rack,
the new Black Boge shocks make for a supple ride on our bounding roads.

Also the new carpet kit came in from Rob Budd,
the lite gray Slivernit carpet will transform this interior.

The carpet kit has 30 pieces in it, so it takes a good deal of time to make it happen
top picture original door panel with the blue carpet
Bottom picture with the new gray carpet laid ontop of the old stuff

Mrmerlin 11-22-2018 10:36 AM

Got an early Thanksgiving present from Rob Budd the dash is now recovered and the door panel contrast inserts are done,
I am removing the stock blue inserts and replacing them with leather that matches the carpets.
This is being done to lighten up the interior some, I think its too much blue.
I think the interiors with contrasting colors give off a more elegant aura to the design of the interior.
And who doesn't like fresh leather and fresh carpets?

NOTE Rob makes these inserts and they are beautiful, he also makes the leather dash covers and the Slivernit carpet sets

Looking good.
