Yes, I understand there may be more to it. I definitely wouldn't want to do anything unlawful but I read somewhere that it could be purchased by an individual as long as the person filling the system is licensed to do so.

The EPA's Final Rule, issued April 1, 1994, states: "In this final rule, the Agency has determined that second generation replacements, if they are non-ozone depleting and are replacing non-ozone depleting first generation alternatives, are exempt from reporting requirements under Section 612".

So what if you have a leak in your AC system and all of the R12 has already been vented into the atmosphere? Now you go and get the AC leak repaired. Can you then refill it with R12A? In this case you are technically not "replacing" anything.
If your AC system is completely depleted, swap the R12 fittings to those necessary for 134a with a retrofit kit, then good to go.

Have you checked craigslist or your local facebook market place? Average price in my area is $25 a can and I can literally buy it all day long. When I see someone selling at $15 or less for 14oz cans, I pick it up for the heck of it. Bought 3 cans for $45 about 2 weeks ago.

The demand is so low and price so cheap, there's no point in all the labor and expense of doing a PROPER 134a conversion or paying the same amount for r-12 alternatives.

The "best price" deal on CL in my area is $400 for a 30lb tank. It's not too hard to find these... just requires a little patience.

Bertrand,

I just found a local guy selling one 18lb and one 30lb. I'm probably going to pick up the 18lb for my self. Let me know if you want to stock up.

Thanks Adam but I'm all set... For now.

I found few small cans so should be good for a (little) while.

R12 is more efficient than the alternatives so if you can preserve using that in your car, you should. I found a 30 lb canister on Craigslist that I picked up a couple years ago for a few hundred dollars and only my 928 uses it so should be good for life or pretty close to it.

Check Craig's List. There are many small cans for sale.
And one 30lb sealed can: (https://stlouis.craigslist.org/mat/d...601158301.html)
This one is pricey. Two years ago I purchased 30lbs for $100. Timing is everything.

This.

Stan pointed me in this direction via PM. I just sourced three 12oz bottles this week from a guy who lives about 5 minutes away. $75 for the three.
