After the recent theft and copying of my crankcase oil separator that fits below the filler neck by Potdog, I've decided to not release any of my new pieces to the general public. The only way someone gets the new pieces is if they are installed in my shop....end of story!

I have new oil contol pieces that will completely eliminate oil in the intake system for an S3. More cost effective (and more efficient) oil separators for the S4 and GTS models. More efficient, more cost effective, greatly improved syncros for 928 transmissions. A new single disc clutch coming down the pipeline. I'm not going to release my A/C system to the public, anymore....only will be installed, in house. My intake system will never be sold to anyone that doesn't have one of my engines.

The list goes on and on.

Go ask Potdog what he's inventing, on his own. Good luck with that!
Well, so long as you tell us what you make so we know we can get it from you that will be good enough. If it becomes a larger issue start filing patents.

I have your windage trays and oil separator, along with a modified dipstick for a provent which I knew you only installed in house for your S4+ breather system.

Thanks for letting me get it from you anyway

Anyways back on topic. Porsche classic has picked up the cam gears so they will most likely stay in production in the known future so long as there is interest in 928s.

If they take them out of production again there are companies that will make new aftermarket gears either in the same alloy or in anything you specify like this one: http://www.rushgears.com/services/reverse-engineering

I plan on using them to make some square teeth steel cam gears for my 81. We'll see how that goes.

Blake, you bring up a very good point. Anything can be made or reproduced. For a cost. So, maybe a better way to say my original statement is that the current parts/service/modification providers make the cost of keeping the 928 running much cheaper than it would be otherwise. It will probably become exponentially more expensive after they are gone. For the right car, even that increased cost will be worth it. But, many 928s aren't going to fall into that category, unfortunately. Which means the community of owners/enthusiasts will shrink drastically.

Anyway, philosophical discussions aside, I'm very much looking forward to getting my 928 back on the road!

Greg, I fully understand the reasons but it's a damn shame that you have been forced to do this. This will not be good news for the 99% 928 owners whose cars you currently do not service. I'm sorry to see it come to this, but again, I fully understand your reasons and intentions.

I get it, but I'm not sure this is a sound business move. It might be good for your general attitude not to see people making copies! In reality though, if you restrict parts sales to ONLY people bringing their car to your shop, you're cutting off a (significant?) income source. Sure, if someone buys one and makes copies, it will reduce that income source potentially, but is not likely to cause someone to not bring their car to your shop. I would expect most of those not-in-person sales to be to people a long ways away. Getting my car from Florida to your shop is not really viable, but ordering your stuff via Roger, or you directly, certainly is.

Of course, it's your business to do with as you wish, and if the income from these sales is not worth the irritation of seeing your stuff copied, then I get it. As a user of some of your stuff, it makes me sad, but it is what it is...

Here is a video of the wear on my cam gears from a few months ago. I had them re-coated. The oil gear was less worn than these but I had that re-coated as well.

Colin Jensan (Lizard928 on RL) has a shop that does it. I can't remember the name right now, but I sent them to Colin directly. I don't have the receipt in front of me, but for all three gears it was around $350 USD give or take.

In case anyone finds this useful, here are photos of the new and old cam and oil gears. I replaced both cam gears, even though the driver side didn't look bad.

Greg, just remember the Soviets copied the B-29, making the Tu-4, a substandard model. And, after Iran captured one of our Stealth Drones a few years ago, now, the Russians have their own stealth drone which was just revealed last week! People always will copy but the originals remain the standard.

Also, go in the way-back machine; early 1980s...Microsoft's cheap rip off of Unix, and IBM making the PC, both allowed people to copy them en mass for the quick buck. Apple, (back then) did NOT allow copying it's OS, and maintained a niche and almost went out of business in 1997. Now, we remember Bill Gates for his problematic PCs, full of virus' (an he's still playing with Virus' today -- just the kind that will kill humanity), we remember the Blue screen of death on these copied machines' OS, all the while Apple kept on plugging away and making new things called the iPod, then that device we all have now the iPhone, and, Apple is stronger than ever and they never allowed copying.
