Default Quality Independent Shop in WI or Chicago

I purchased a 1984 S near Appleton WI yesterday from BringATrailer.com for my son as a father/son project. It hasn't gotten much use in the past number of years but the website has a video of the car being driven and the engine, brakes and transmission seem solid. Having said that, there is probably plenty that needs to be done to it to make it roadworthy for a long trip. Do I:

1) Have it shipped to Denver where my son and I can do the easier stuff and my BMW/Mercedes/Porsche guy can do the complicated stuff?
2) Have it gone over by a qualified shop in northern Wisconsin or the Chicago area to get put into roadworthy condition? One of my sisters lives in Chicago which means if it gets put into roadworthy condition it can sit at her place for a few weeks or a month until I can get there and drive it back to Denver. My son and I can do a road trip from Chicago to Denver.

I trust my Denver guy with my 6-series BMW (although he has gotten very busy as his reputation got established.) Does anyone have a shop they really like in WI or Chicago area that is reasonably priced and quality?

Thank you one and all!

Road trip sounds like fun!

Talk to either Rick at Fischer Motors in Barrington or Mark Hill at Cars Plus in Darien.

Good luck. Safe travels.

Hi Jeff,

Congratulations on the buy, I'm very familiar with that car and I was involved with the modifications when they were completed 20 or so years ago.

Have you talked to the seller? I was under the impression it was already at The Auto Clinic in Neenah, they are very familiar with 928's.
Otherwise, Page Auto in Green Bay is the shop who modified the car back in the day. They've been working on 928's since the early 80's.

No way I'd take this car anywhere in Chicago compared to the two above.

Thank you both. The shop who is handling the sale is too busy. I am meeting my son in St. Louis for father's day but it won't be drivable then. But he is back in mid-July. I can fly into WI, pick it up and drive it to St. Louis and drive back to Denver with him.

My Denver guy will probably be at least as costly.

Thanks for the referrals.

When I bought my 928, I had it shipped to Carl Fausett at 928 Motorsports in Horicon, WI for a bunch of refresh and upgrade work. Add them to your list as a possible location.

Jeff,

I also recommend Page Auto in Green Bay, he does great work.

Have a look at this page: https://928motorsports.com/superinstall.php
There are some shops near you that you might like. The list can be sorted by State by clicking on the State header.

Thank you everyone! I spoke with Justin at Page Auto in Green Bay. They did the original S4 suspension swap years ago. He said he still has the donor car for that work. I'm going to have the vehicle moved from Neenah to Green Bay for some TLC and then pick it up and drive it to St. Louis where I will meet my son and then the two of us will drive it to Denver. I noticed www.bringatrailer.com has some series on road trips to pick up vehicles so I hope I remember to document our trip.

I'm at Page Auto, look what arrived!!

Jim and I missed this car, easily the deal of the year. Well bought.

Jim and I are looking through the repair orders from 18 years ago. It was towed in, didn't run. Found the timing belt missing teeth & timing off. Owner opted not to fix & Jim bought the car.

Here we are in 2018:

Well what do you know! I wasn't expecting it to get there today. I need to loop in my son.

Current plans are to fly into Green Bay and pick it up around July 17th and then drive down to St. Louis. My son is in a soccer camp mid-month. He has the 19th to get back to Denver for another soccer camp which starts on the 20th. That'll be our father-son trip. Actually, I will have to look into getting it delivered from Green Bay to Chicago and then I can retrieve it from my sister's place. Shorter drive for me.
