Default torque tube issues.....help

hi all

I haven't been on here in a few years.
i have an 81 manual car ive owed it since 05.this year I decided to tackle the grinding into first gear issue when rolling at any faster than waking pace.

so far I have had a shop fully recondition the gearbox. while that was away being done I have fitted new toe end bearing, clutch, alternator.

today I refitted the gearbox all was going well until I tried to put the pinch bolt into the clamp where the splines on the torque tube meet the gearbox.
the pinch bolt now doesn't line up with the shaft at the gearbox its about 3 mm out! i don't think theres any adjustment on the splined shaft running through the torque tube?
ive tried relaxing all pinch bolt to try to gain the small bit of movement I need to connect to the gearbox to nothing seems to adjust.

anybody any ideas? do I have an issue with the company the bebuilt the gearbox....is the imput shaft somehow in a slightly different position.

Loose the front pinch bolt.
Move the shaft (from front with vise grip) to align it with the rear grove.
Tight the rear bolt first, than the front one.

hi thanks for taking the time.

yes I have loosened the front pinch bolt and tried to tap the shaft backwards so as to line up but doesn't seem to want to move.have you done this yourself?
should the shaft float backwards?maybe mine is just stuck in the bearings and needs a bigger force to get it to move back.
also not much access to get a vice grips in there?
weird part is if this is the case I would have thought when I bolted all back as it was before I should have lined up.

No I have never did this but read about it here.

Like you said, possibly the shaft is stuck in the bearing(s).

anyone else know for sure that the shaft will slide in the bearings...before I use extra force on it?

I would suggest to slide the front clamp onto the drive shaft, so that the front hole lines up with the cutout,
install the the front bolt into the hole , then tighten it ,
you should then be able to pry the shaft rearwards.

NOTE you should have a helper to either pry or watch the rear pinch bolt slot so the shaft is properly positioned.

NOTE dont use vice grips on the shaft as it can cause damage to the surface and then a stress riser can form,
this then can cause the shaft to shear at the stress riser

GOT IT SORTED!!
just before I read mrmerlins recommendations which were exactly correct.id remembered putting the torque tube and gearbox back together for the first time id accidently left the pinch bolt in the clamp.
the small bump on first attempt had pushed the shaft forward the 3mm I was out.

many thanks to all,can get on with finishing this job off and get my car back on the road
