Default Power steering pump question

Took my 928 out for a spin and then it happen. I heard a weird snap, and i thought oh........ crap. I turned around and looked for any fluid or debris on the ground and seen nothing. I decided to take her home and then i noticed at the stop light the steering felt like an old car with no power steering.

Needless to say, drove her in the garage and then shut the car off. I thought maybe the belt broke and i was going to be lucky. Well, belt was not broken and nothing looked out of ordinary. So i started her back up and then i heard the bearing type of noise. First thought, damn it, the alternator is going out again, but no i could tell the power steering pump was (haunting) spinning not well.

So, first question.

I just replaced the power steering fluid and filter about 6 months ago. Pretty much a flush and replaced the filter.

I checked the fluid and its one notch low, so did this cause the failure? By ME... gzzzzzzzz

Second, the car came with extra power steering pump. So, im thinking maybe the original owner new it was going to happen sooner than later?

My car has way over 240k miles and the OD is not working... so, id assume its the same pump from the factory.

Third, I looked at Dwayne's write up on power steering pump and alternator. I didn't see a write up with pictures on removing the pump. Plus, i need to remove the alternator too. Darn the luck, i just replaced it.

Any help or guidance on replacement would be appreciated. Id assume, it would not be good to drive the car with the pump not working correctly and possibly damaging the steering rack.

As always, i appreciate any help and i plan on doing a video of my repair to help others too.

thanks jpc

Phil,

You will want to drain and remove the reservoir and the lines associated with the reservoir from above the car. You could also loosen the bolts holding the front of the pump to the bracket, but I prefer to remove the rear bolt before loosening these.

Once you are below the car, you really don't need to remove the alternator, you just need to move it out of your way. The wires can stay attached, but don't let the alternator hang by the wires. Instead, set it on a box, or paint can or something else of sufficient height to hold it while you are dealing with the steering pump.

When the alternator is out of the way, you can see and remove the elusive bolt that holds the rear of the steering pump and the high pressure line connection from the back of the pump. The rest is really pretty easy.

First thanks for the reply.

Update: found the issue on pump. Metal fatigue on the bolts holding pulley.

I've decided to replace the entire pump instead of fixing the current one.

I have removed the alternator and fluid, steering reservoir and most of the lines and clamps.

Issue:
I'm having troubles removing this (think its) 17 mm bolt fluid line. See picture from bottom side of engine.

This bolt does remove, right? I had the entire pump unit taken apart and had to bolt it back because the line in the picture would not budge. I'm thinking breaker bar.

The fluid line bolt above had a clamp and was easily removed.

Thanks !

Yes, It removes. Sometimes those banjo bolts are tight as heck.

put a box wrench on the banjo bolt,

then get a 18mm box wrench and put the box end on the open end of the wrench on the banjo bolt, and loosen it
