One additional tip regarding how to get the plunger from the tensioner into the dimple in the idler arm. I found it easiest to first install the tensioner. Then install the belt normally but do not slip it onto the passenger side cam sprocket yet (do pull it over the other sprockets and make sure there is no slack anywhere else). Next install the idler arm. Finally slip the belt onto the passenger side cam sprocket. It has enough slack to be able to slip onto the sprocket very easily even when the tensioner and idler arm are in place. Just make sure the sprocket is correctly aligned. Then just proceed with tightening the belt.

Best regards

Default Is complete tensioner replacement necessary?

Mentioned on another post so apologies for redundancy, casting a wide net. Just got an 86.5 w/82k. Maint history unknown so having a complete timing belt/water pump replacement. Mechanic is recommending replacing tensioner. Wondering if it’s better to rebuild? Replacement is crazy expensive ($1300) I’ll do it, got a great deal on car, but wondering if rebuild is better. Appreciate any advice, I am a complete novice. Thx!

Rebuild is quite easy, requires a gasket, boot, clamp, and an O-ring, IIRC. WSM gives instructions.
Also, look at post #81 where I had the tensioner apart for my 1986.5:

Good Luck!!!
