Default Ignition distributor stuck in flange mounting?

I think i made a mistake today working on my '79 euro engine. I pushed the ignition distributor in its place but noticed that i did not push it in correctly (the mark on the housing was not alligned with the rotor). So then i pulled it up again from the flange mounting to try and het the timing correct, but i noticed that it is stuck. And not a little bit, like completely stuck, the bizarre part is that it is out half way up, the 0-ring is actually already out of the housing but it does not go up any further, like it is stuck behind something? I made the mistake of not using some grease will putting it in

Anybody ever had this experience? I really do not understand i had it in earlier and it came out with some little pressure?
