Such a transmission wasn't readily available.
1984-1989 GM was screwing around with the 4+3 fiasco and didn't go with a 6-speed until ZF came out with that unit. By then Porsche wasn't exactly in a position to revamp the platform.

You always seem to forget the 928 dates back to 1972, and when debuted in 1977 it was very much ahead of it's time. Have you seen what else as on the market in 1977? What else was ahead of the 928 during this era?

A 928 GT don ´t need an overdrive! Perfect for driving fast and sporty! People who bought a 130.000 DM car don t need fuel economy.

Erik and Rob, that's my point though.

They could've designed/built a 6-speed with overdrive and truly been innovative in solving their fuel consuption concerns.

"The new Porsche 928 with an industry-first 6-speed manual transmission, 6.0L engine, 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds, all while getting 25 mpg!"

That would have made quite a headline as well as impact on the automotive industry.

Yeah sure, after a 12 hour day in the Cash GT (nota bene with RMB) driving across the country at speed, I do feel a little bit like I've been run through a mixer. BUT, threads like this confuse me.

Our cars WERE the technology and design principle of the era: fewer gears and flexible motors with a broad power band, and the idea of having the motor spinning at a speed somewhere in that power band. Nothing more visceral than 3'400rpm on the highway with full power right on tap for reving and shifting! :-)))

If you WANT a car with an engine optimized for ONE RPM and a 15 speed transmission electronically shifting around this rpm to optimize noise level, comfort, fuel efficiency, (and focus grouped for the kids and grandma too) then buy a NEW technology car based on new design principles!

For some of us, these new technologies are the whole reason we ended up in THIS PLACE though...

Choose wisely.

Sure, that's exciting for maybe the first 30 minutes, but I'd much rather be turning 1,700 RPM at 75 mph in my 89 GT.

And full power in the sweet-spot starting at 4,000 RPM would be just one downshift away, and only when I choose to do so. And then upshifting into overdrive again when the threat has passed. That would be great!

Plenty of cars in Europe with an overdrive unit though
