Default Timing Belt Attempted Seppuku Today

Big noise, lots of screeching, screaming..after washing the car.

Smoke, rubber smell, lots of smoke..car off hood open, smoke from intake horns...???...remove tube, smoke from cam gear vents.

Ok..well, not dead yet. Headed to Hi Tec Automotive only a few mi away from Sear Point here..

Last service in my records was: 1/20/09 WP/TB/Thermostat/Belts/HW, Oil Change Hi Tec Auto

So..right bout 20yrs, and 30K miles.

That it didn't break, is already good news.

I hope you disconnected the battery after the smoke alerted you.

Oh, and bring us back the winning Power Ball numbers from the future.

(If belt change was in ‘09 and it’s been 20 years then you’re in 2029...)

And in 2029 they're predicting the Panemera will spawn a 928 next year.

It was on my mind, but hearing the screech of rubber and the clear smell of roaching rubber, not plastic...kept me from that. But I didnt coast the car to an open garage here at Sears Point if I needed a bottle or a fire hose.

It all happened at idle speed in a parking lot.

Now is a good time to disconnect the battery odds are very good that the next starting event will snap the belt and take out some valves
please post pictures once you get the belt covers off

RIGHT! Because the belt has now melted onto the pulley.

Why would there possibly be a 'next starting event' on this?

Why would I do that?

It's not about YOU. Disconnecting the battery will make it much more difficult for someone else to trash your motor.

This story - of the belt melted to the seized pulley - usually ends, badly, with a 'helpful' tow truck driver or mechanic just 'seein' if'n she'll start-up.'

What Dave said .........

Tow truck driver,................ I tried to start it and it it turns over real fast but it wont start.

or your next favorite mechanic trying to diagnose it without taking off the belt covers first..............I tried to start it and it it turns over real fast but it wont start.

SRSLY.......... disconnect the battery

This way it has to be turned over by hand,
and that should give enough time for most hood openers to smell the charred rubber lingering in the engine bay,
and give them pause to find out more before they touch it.

Yep. Long ago I had a 944S do this. Shut down immediately, towed to Porsche, put a message on the key not to start it. They did anyway, broke belt, 14 new valves, yada ya. Pull out the battery and disconnect the starter, that will keep them busy until you can get out of the tow truck :-)
