What would you pay for a '89 S4?
Its an auto, no maintenance history, last TB and WP job unknown. The flex plate has not been inspected by the current owner. Mileage is unknown due to a cluster replacement, assumed to be over 150k. The owner describes this example as a good driver. Thanks.

89 is the best year of S4's. It all comes down to Exterior, Interior, and how much deferred maintenance will be necessary and needed.
Remember this: Almost every PO says, " It was running when I got it here"
Get a PPI from a reputable/knowledgeable 928 person

I would say, Not Enough Information. Pictures of the exterior, interior and engine are required.

Boils down to paint & interior.
If those are at least 8/10 or better, I'd pay only a fractional amount less for this car than one with similar mileage and average maintenance up to date.
TB / WP job is going to happen sooner or later regardless of maintenance history. If the crank end play concerns you that much have that measured first or walk away.
If it needs a respray, dash, seats fixed etc... this is borderline a parts car or track car. Decent paint & interior is far more expensive than catching up on maintenance, or even replacing an engine.

I agree with what has already been said by others....
It is easy to rack up big expenses in no time...

Thanks for the info. I’m waiting on pictures. The owner says with the car in neutral and turning the engine over via the crank pulley it turns with normal resistance. Thanks.

What ever the price, if currently not running, plan on $15K-$20K to get it to the point of being a "good driver". More if you pay someone to do all the work. Then more on top if the interior is shot. But that shouldn't necessarily deter you if you can get it for under $5K and it's the color combo you want and you enjoy working on cars. A well sorted, driver quality '89 S4 auto with high miles will go for about $18K-$23K. So you will be into this one for more, but you'll know exactly what you have and what you don't. Paying ~$20K up front for a drivable example and you will still have MX to do along the way.

Last fall I paid $1800 for a barely running 88 S4. Marginal paint, int, but complete car, and it will run(eventually).
I would say options and paint, int condition anywhere from $2k up to $6k. Not running means just that, not running. Worst case you are looking at a TBF motor, and full engine repl.

My 89 with 86k miles, in theory, was a runner, but I didn't start it because I had no history on TB/WP replacement. I paid $7k for it (spent too much, but I fell in love), another $9k for deferred maintenance items, and $8k for a completely new interior. Paint is a driver quality respray, but it's starting to lift in spots, so I'll have to plan on that soon as well. I know I'm probably upside down on the car, and it'll be worse when the paint gets done. I'd do it all over again though, and the $15-$20k everyone is saying is spot on.
