Brett - are they new blanks or reworked - S3 cams cut and welded?

Brett Jenkins 05-16-2018 09:59 PM

I believe the part #'s shown are S3. Unless Carl also made some from new blanks, I assume they are reworked.

Camshafts made by WEB Cams. Hard face welded and reground. Good quality. The lobe profiles look pretty mild though.

Web Cam makes them for us. They have done an excellent job for us for years, with no cam failures.

To make our camshafts, we start with an original Porsche® camshaft for your car, so you know that the fit, finish, and materials are the best they can be and exactly right for your 928. The cam lobes are hard-welded up to a Rockwell 60 spec and then re-ground to the lift and duration we specify using computer-controlled welding and grinding processes to achieve the highest quality result. The temperature of the cool-down after welding is strictly controlled to eliminate glazing and heat-checking. Then the camshaft is magna-fluxed to check for cracks and fully inspected. Finally, the camshafts are electrostatically coated with a Molybdenum spray for oil retention during the break-in process.

The result is a superior-quality camshaft with a 1-year cam lobe wear warranty, (most cam manufacturers only offer a 6 month warranty).

Thanks Brett - asking on behalf of a customer - they look like S3 cams that have been cut and welded - is that correct? Nothing wrong with that and I have a set of S3 modified cams in one of my own GTS cars.
Carl - the S3 profile is pretty close to GT - 89 to 91 (GT cams all had the same profile IIRC) but these are specifically reground to a 90/91 GT profile. How is that different from an 89 cam?
Question - are these S3 cams cut and welded on two of the cams?
Question - How does the 90/91 GT profile compare to the 89 GT profile?
Question - Strostek Ultra says the profiles are mild ( I am not a cam expert but trust what SU says) you say they are slightly more aggressive than GT cams

We are looking to put these in a GTS - the goal is an S3 cam set with as close to a GT profile as possible.
You state these are warranted for 1 year - is this still the case for these cams?
Thanks Roger

I'm in the shop, Roger, on a car that has a firm pick-up date and must get finished on time.

I will get to your questions as quick as I can.

The intake cam lobes seems to be same as stock 928S3 intake (292.04). The exhaust cam lobes seems to be same as 928S4 intake (291.09). See attached diagrams. https://928motorsports.com/parts/camshafts.php

As comparison this is the stock 928GTS intake lobe profile (272.03).

Thanks Carl & Åke,
My GTS has S3 cams welded and reworked. They were made for me by Jim Morton and he described them as slightly more aggressive than the GT profile.
They added SIGNIFICANT power to my GTS with some Shark Tuning and my customer wants to emulate that as close as possible.

Carl Fausett 05-17-2018 01:21 PM

Those cams were ordered from us on 3/25/2010. That's a long time ago for me to find much out about them, but these are the specs they were ground to:

928MS Model Intake lift and duration Exhaust lift and duration 928MS 32vS1393" / 214 deg.353" / 200 deg

soontobered84 05-17-2018 02:23 PM

When using the modified S3 cams in a different engine (say an S4 or GTS engine), would one use the original valve springs or would S3 valve springs be used?

ROG100 05-17-2018 04:21 PM

I used the original springs but swapped the lifter for lightweight ones.
