Default Sudden throttle drop then recovery

85 Auto

On a nice backroads drive, I pull over to take a phone call. Put car in park.
Two minutes later, I shift into drive and suddenly, I have only very low throttle (800 rpm). Pushing accelerator does nothing. Car seems choked.
I put my flashers on and ease the car along the road at 20 mph.
Five minutes later, the throttle suddenly returns to full and remains fine for the remaining 90 minutes of the ride.

Air intake is fine.
I did add a bit of fuel injector cleaner a couple days ago.

Any ideas?
Momentarily clogged fuel injector? Fuel pump fit?

Thanks.

I had a similar power drop when cruising at 50 mph (3rd gear, auto) on my way to a C&C two weeks back.
I had added some fuel system cleaner (Sea Foam), my experience was quick, started looking for traffic and a way to the side, then vroom back in business and it never returned.

Going to change out the Fuel filter, as it's been a few years.

With my car is was more like the fuel was completely shut off, I glanced at the gauges and saw nothing (fuel and fuel pressure), however engine was back quickly, it wasn't a miss fire like a single injector.

Hmmm. Sea Foam is what I added as well. A clue!
Good call on the fuel filter. Thanks.

My 82 had a similar issue....which is why it was parked for about 12 years by the O.O. The P.O. couldn’t fix it, so he just butchered everything.

once I got it all back together, turned out the FI relay was flaking out.....keep a couple spares handy....

Thanks for this. Relays - the source of so many 928 problems.

They get old and worn out.

There's a reason Jim Bailey's mantra is "Relay, relay, relay."

For the majority of them, replacement is cheap.

I keep a spare '53' relay in the glove box and a few more in the parts box.
