wiring Question

In the picture posted, there are a pair of fairly heavy gauge red wires coming from the passenger floor that are sheathed in a rubber hose and terminate with two round connectors. These wires do not reach to the alternator, or anything else on the left side of the engine. What are they supposed to be attached to? Starter? If starter, then what to do with the heavier gauge single wire that runs along the underside of the car from battery positive I thought would attach to the starter post? James |
if these wires are coming from the right side footwell area then its a safe bet they are feeds for a stereo/ amp.
I will guess they will attach to the starter. That thick wire running down the driverside chassis rail is from the hot post of the battery and connects to the starter |
I pulled the kick panel in front of the fuse/relay board and found the wires. When connected to the big post on the starter,along with the battery cable, I saw my instrument panel work for the first time; when I connected only the big cable from the + of the battery to the big post on the starter, I got no working elements on the dash. The connectors on the panel are large blades, one vertical and one horizontal.

thats not stock, looks like some funky rewire is going on,
it would be best to find out where the wire originally went. You will need the WD from WSM |
I have the WD; I'll un tape the two connectors and see whats what. Crushingday has a gig in OC and has agreed to let me take pics of his engine compartment etc., as I reconstruct Lili.

Three heavier wires come from under the fuse relay panel, sheathed. They connect to blade connectors on the panel in the area of the number 30 visible on the panel.the two heavy wires to the right are the ones that have been spliced into and run beneath the passengers footwell.

30 is the battery + bus, so I guess I understand why the two wires would be spliced into for the starter; Why wouldn't just the big battery + cable attached to the starter do the same thing? James |
If you found the 2 eyelet cables in the pax footwell, how did you connect one to the starter post? Push it through to the engine bay? From looking at my spare 79 fuse board, the 3 large spade connectors down low (1 horizontal, 2 vertical?) the board are part of the big sheet metal common supply rail feeding 12 fuses up top. These are seen incentre of your pic. I did reply to your other post re removing the big supply rail sheet, but havent seen a response.

the PO sent the two wires that had been spliced onto the blades of the 30 bus through a small hole in the floor. rubber hose is sheathed around them. They reach to the starter post, and both attach to the post along with the large + cable from the battery. Again, without them in the circuit, I get no instrument lights.

Makes a little sense now. Somewhere there will be damaged wires that should have fed the +12v in. Have you tried to find out what else works with them connected?

an update: the two heavy gauge wires that were spliced into two wires at the 30 bus on the elect. panel would have been fed by the second heavy wire coming off B+ on the Alternator, according to the electrical flow chart. instead, the PO has the wires connecting to the power distribution center (elec. panel?) the directly to the starter, instead of connecting to the starter by the alternator. Does this make a difference?

It doesn't really make much difference - but you have to wonder why it was changed? Nearer to the starter is better for starting (more voltage to the ECU's - but after that nearer to the alternator is better because while running power is supplied by the alternator.
In practice on a stock car these actually come from the jump post which is in the middle between both starter & alternator. Alan |
with the starter install complete, all wires connected, the dash lights up with or without the jumpers being connected to the two post at 30. It takes me back to Stan's first post, suggesting a stereo installation.
No need for my audio install. can I get rid of them? James |
