Default My 79 Questions Thread, I'll Add Pics As I Go

Hi Guys,

I'll keep my questions for this car in this thread and hopefully it may help some others in the future.

Question here is: Can early 4.7 heads be used on a 4.5 and if they can are there any performance / reliability gains? And Is there a tutorial some where on head removal? And can it be done in the car? I've searched and can't really find to much.

I'm going to need to lean on a fair bit on you guys that are familiar with the early cars. I've learnt a lot from my semi-resto on the S3 and it goes without saying I'd have been screwed if it wasn't for some of you gents with vast banks of knowledge. So, thank you very much. I've already discovered that between the two cars I own there are some quite large differences.

I've already removed the front and rear spoilers so now she is a proper OB.

Cheers
Scott

Damage to repair after S4 wing removal and front S spoiler removal.
Which brings me to another question. This clearly had an S spoiler on it at some point. What do I need to replace the window trim to get it back to OB style?

Another question. Is the rear 1/4 window trim the same for the early cars as an S4?

I had spares in the back seat of my '79 when I bought it. I'll take pictures if you are interested tomorrow.

Thanks James. It would appear there is no real difference to the later cars except for the trim piece when there's no sunroof or rear wiper. My rear wiper switch is on the pod. Not sure why they screwed mine up in that fashion.

No. The early cars differ slightly at the point towards the rear of the car. The trim differs. Not sure if the glass actually differs. It's more sharp on an early car. I think the change took place after 80.

G’day Scott,

I look forward to your progress here, full pics would be great when you get it sorted, I also have a spoiler to remove from mine.

Both my ‘79 RHD euros have the same original power window switches, faded I know, but I like this patina!

Hi Kiwi,
Thanks mate. That's exactly what i needed to see. The bozo's that the car before have clearly turned the metal mount upside down and then fitted those stupid switches. I going to need to find that little centre trim piece from somewhere. Kiwi, can I ask for a pic of your rear quarter window and the trim nearest the lower rear bottom corner please.
It's going to be slow progress. I have an S3 eating up my $$$ and time at the moment, and I just lent my son a chunk of $$$ for a house so I need to work more!!

Hi Guy ( my oldest lads name),
Thanks for that. I will probably need to find an S4 local to me and check it out I reckon. If it's not a drastic change I'll probably use the S4 trim if it works. Anything has to be better than what's there now.

Thanks guys. Really appreciate your time. I have a Rock Auto discount code if anybody can use it. They say give it to friends and family who work on cars, what better than my 928 family! The code is 8318558174597573 and you put it in the 'how did you hear about us' box. Valid until July 8, 2018

G’day mate, is this what you are after?

(You can see the “joiner-clip”, for want of the correct term, is slightly misplaced on my silver car, slides easily back into place though), hope this helps.

Scott

Regarding your 4.7 head question. Later L jet heads differ from CIS heads in the air injection circuit. Late heads have the rear bungs plumbed to the intake side. Early heads are plumbed to the exhaust. The air pump pumped fresh air into the exhaust stream thru the heads, in later cars it's the cold injection circuit. You can use them but need to make provisions for the differences.
