Exhaust options, 83S ROW
It’s time to do something with the front of my exhaust system. It appears that to “federalize” the car, the center section of the muffler was cut out and the ends sort of crimped/welded to a catalyst core.
I don’t want real loud. I want to keep the dual pipes.
Options are:
For about $200 I can get a used front muffler and lead pipes from England and go back to stock.
I would really like to replace this with an X pipe. Does an X pipe made for American cars with dual exhaust (5 liter) bolt up to stock manifolds on the 4.7?
The third option would be to use an aftermarket lead pipe/catalytic converters set up, but again the ones with dual out pipes are for the later “American” cars, so same question, will they bolt up?
Last, sound. Which option will Be acceptably quiet?

I just purchased a complete U.S. '83 system for my '78, and left the original Euro pre-muffler in place. Both the '78 and the '83 were a single pipe system. I did purchase a Y-pipe, but ended up not using it because my pre-muffler was in great shape. I think that any Y-pipe or X-pipe you would get to replace the above muffler would also bolt right up to a stock system.
IMHO, I would go back stock & correct for '83.. If you must have dual exhaust, I'd get a complete later year stock system. Some will praise their aftermarket stuff, but I've never had great luck with fit & finish, unless I'm spending an incredible amount of cash (and sometimes not even then).

I would find a used factory dual cat and fit it in place of the botched muffler. No stink, and it flows exceptionally well and can easily support an engine making 400 hp without much restriction.
Otherwise a standard X pipe will fit if it was designed to replace the factory cats in a dual exhaust car.
