Default How much grease in CV joints?

Dwayne's write-up has him squeezing in almost two sachets of the grease that came in new boot kit. My kit likely the same and has two 80g tubes.

The WSM though says to put in 40g of grease each side of the joint, 80g total.

When I last replaced boots, using two 80g tubes of grease made a heck of a mess! Should I just stick to the WSM and use one 80g
tube total to grease a single joint?

Thanks.

I put one tube in a side its plenty and will be just about full once the joint is installed and compressed.
If you want it coating your wheel then put in two tubes.

Thanks Stan - I just greased outer joint and put more than one tube in, only because you can't get good access to the joint and rely on the vacuum/pumping thing to get grease down there. There's much better access to inner joint so will use single tube there.

Pleased that getting the outer boot onto the flange took me seconds this time, when last and first time I did the job I was struggling and getting very frustrated at that point. This time I warmed the boot up first in hot water (dried thoroughly), and angled shaft so it went on one side of the flange, and was easy to stretch over from there.

Follow up question. Dwayne's write-up shows him greasing the inner joint only after reinstalling on shaft, and packing in grease from only the side where it meets the diff. When I last did this job the most mess was from packing both sides of that joint before installing on shaft, and having to clear a way through all the grease to install and seat the snap ring. It would be great if it was ok to install the joint 'clean' and grease from one side only but is it? Again the WSM says to pack both sides.

When I did mine the it Roger sent me a I remember had 4 sachets of grease and I simply put one sachet in each joint and it did the trick ok. Did you get some sachets of grease or are you providing the grease separately?

Either way, if all else fails "follow the instructions!".

I guess you also say how much came out ,
my guess is it will be close to one tube.

When the axle is under load the shafts are pressed further into the CV joints this also compresses the boots,
with an overload of grease the grease will come out of the smaller or larger clamped area once things heat up,
or be forced into the center of the hollow shaft via the end.

You get two 80g sachets with each GKN Lobro kit (GKN p/n 300527), and you need two kits per shaft as there's only one boot in each kit. I imagine they supply 2 x 80g sachets to cover themselves for any joints needing more than 80g. I'm only going to use single sachet on the inner joint, but I'm wondering if it's ok to grease it on only one side after mounting on axle. If the hot grease ends up moving easily through the joint once it's warmed up then it should be OK. But I're realised that I can mount it 'clean', and still have reasonable access to the joint on the flange side to pack in grease from both sides. The inner boot is already on the shaft and slid down out of the way too.
