Default Radiator Pic/Diagram/Etc.

Anyone know where there might be a picture or diagram of the 928 radiator with both transmision and oil cooler in the end tanks? I am replacing mine because of my strong suspicion that one is leaking and would just be interested in the setup. Shop manual CD doesn't have it and one of my goals this year is to expand my limited 928 knowledge. Thanks in advance. Happy New year!

Patrick,

I strongly recommend you disconnect both the oil cooler lines on the drivers side, and the trans cooler lines on the passenger side. Then pressurize the coolant system at the radiator cap to check for leaks visually. If the coolant then leaks out of one end tank port you know what tank needs to be removed, if it is that type of problem. Hopefully it's something a bit simplier for you.

There are several other items that a pressure test will identify for you.

I am curious, what is your symptoms?

If need be I do have a good radiator.

John:

I had posted a topic ("Oil In The Coolant" I think) quite some time ago because of a concern I had shortly after buying the car. The problem has continued for several years but the oil in the coolant was minimal and the car ran (and runs) fine. There was, and never has been, any coolant in the oil or transmission fluid. Within the last several weeks, however, the passenger side end tank began to leak and I was adding up to a gallon of distilled water a day. After describing my situation to some fellow Rennlisters, the consensus was that I more than likely had two problems. First, the gasket on the end tank needed replacing. Not that big of a deal. Second, the oil cooler was leaking, a bigger deal since my understanding is that they no longer make them. As such I began looking for a used radiator and 928 International shipped one earlier this week (used).

Something interesting (at least to me) is what is happening with the car at the moment. I pulled the old radiator to install one I had that I thought would work (See post "Anyone Need A Radiator?") When I realized it wouldn't and was tired of borrowing the wife's car, I decided to put the old one back in pending receipt of a replacement. Before doing so, however, I was able to clean out otherwise inaccessible leaves, twigs, etc. Also, since the temp here in Nashville was in the 30's at the time, I switched from 20w-50 to 10w-40. While still getting some oil in the coolant (read "distilled water") I am amazed at how cool the engine is staying. The temp barley reaches mid range. Further, with the lower engine temp there is very minmal leakage from the end tank. If I were independently wealthy, I would love to tear the old radiator end tanks and coolers apart just to see how they worked. The operative word in the previous sentence is, of course, "if."

Hope this wasn't too much info! Thanks for your input.
