Default 89 Euro first start - Temp 2 Explosion SOLVED

And she runs. We had her going for about 8-10 minutes and then.........KAPOW!

The Temp 2 sensor exploded and shot right out of it's base. Screen grab attached from the video we were shooting. Prior to starting we ran the JDS tester twice more and had no faults. Although earlier we did get two different faults 1: Temp Sensor open CIrcuit 2: Temp 2 sensor short or break. I did plug in an old sensor after this happened and ran the tests again and both the LH and EZK tested fine, no temp sensor faults. Could this just be the sensor?

Has anyone ever seen this type of failure? Obviously I will be going back to check continuity on the temp 2 wires looking for any shorts, etc.

But we were totally happy to hear her run.

60 frames per second on the GoPro, LOL.

It was running fine, nice smooth idle. We had it runing for a few minutes then shut her down to inspect the underside for any issues, then on our second start the Temp 2 Sensor attempted a space launch. I will test the wiring on Saturday.

Where did you get the sensor from- Space X?

maybe some one hit it with a hammer before installing it.
This is a first for me.

I think this is a first for everyone. Just my luck, LOL. I'm going to check each of the two wires from the plug back to the EZK and LH, as I need to confirm that all is well with the wiring before trying to start it again with a new sensor. And since there are two separate circuits there should be no continuity between pin 1 and pin 2 at the plug for the sensor.

I guess when a fire starts in a confined space there is nowhere to go but up!

Hmm, was that a temp sensor or a detonator?

Is this the sensor wire that can be confused with the tank vent circuit wire and burns out if the wires get crossed?

Yes it is. But I had already run continuity checks on the appropriate pins on the LH and EZK to the temp 2 plug during my intial no start issue. And I had labeled everything during the harness rebuild and I think the tank vent plug is still original, will have to take a look.

Damn, that's something I've never encountered. There shouldn't be anything in that harness that could put that amount of voltage through there, unless there is a serious issue in it.

So I'm guessing that it was getting spark ?

Note to self: do not use explosive Temp II sensors when replacing.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Yes that is exactly what I did. My guess is when I had everything part to check the harness after the no-start I switched them because I had checked the temp 2 circuit to the EZK & LH. I had rebuilt both with new plugs, so they are identical. The good news is there is no short inside the harness, the heat shrink tubing over my solder joints shorted, likely from the short and launch of the sensor. I'm going to re-wrap that wire and run the Evap Tank test with the JDS spanner to confirm that the circuit is fully operational. Lesson here is always lable your connectors.

Update, all fixed. Tank vent actuator tested and working. I hooked up a used temp 2 sensor and the test was good as well. I dodged a bullet.
