Paint or anodize, do not powder coat.
I know powder coating wheels is very common, multiple wheel manufacturers have spoken about the dangers of doing so. When wheels are powder coated during construction it's part of the overall curing process of the wheel. Subjecting the aluminum to 400+ degree heat after the fact can weaken the wheel.
I'll be having a set of phone dials anodized locally. They quoted me $75 - 100 per wheel.
