Putting carpet through the washer

I have had great result restoring carpets by tossing them into the washer. I soak them with Shout, use a stiff brush to get it into the carpet and toss them in with Woolite.

That really did clean them up Kevin, did the wool mat up at all?

Also any ideas on removing Rust stains? I have some Light Gray carpet that have Rust stains from the buckles on the floor mat's.

Thanks,

Dave

No matting - what you see is how they came out of the washer. The light gray carpet I did only had coffee stains and they were gone.

As for rust - maybe try some CLR from Home Depot as a pre-treatment.

What about drying? I assume air dry?

Eplebnista 04-02-2018 12:14 PM

To dry just hold one in each hand as you run from your wife after blowing up the transmission in her washing machine.

^^^^:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao: I was kind of thinking that too!

Air dry - almost dry after the spin cycle.

For those rust stains, try a little vinegar first. Let it soak for about 5 min. See what that does.

OK, I'll try that thanks!
I'm hopping I can get them out as the carpet was relatively new, but the car sat out and they were wet when I purchased it, thus the rust stains from the Floor Mat buckles. :(
If not I'll do a CLR test on an unseen section ;)

Thanks,

Dave

use cold water and hang the carpets to air dry ,
adding heat can cause the glue to get sticky

CLR uses Lactic acid as the main ingredient. It is a slightly stronger acid than acetic acid [vinegar]. pKa of 3.8 for Lactic vx 4.8 for Acetic.

CLR is 12 - 18% Lactic acid vs 5% Acetic for standard strength vinegar. That just means the vinegar will take a little more and a little longer to work the same as the CLR.

Ya know? One thing I love about this place is that someone can post a totally serious subject, have really good ideas and info.

Then someone else posts some silly one liner like this. The visual in my head of Kevin running down the street, holding the carpets, being chased by his wife is awesome. Totally cracks me up. Of course, getting bloodstains out of the carpets is going to wreck another washer.

And the next post simply goes on and addresses the PH of various rust removers.

On a serious note: When Rob Edwards did the Cobalt GT, I seem to recall that he carefully placed the carpets on the inner sides of the drum of the washer, with the nap facing the wall and the backing inward.

Did you do anything like that?

I am employed by large healthcare cooperative. For rust spotting on linen, Rustgo is what is used.
