How is it possible to adjust this front shock?
I've got the front shock apart and the adjusting ring has threads on it but the shock doesn't. What am I missing here? Wrong strut? The new strut is just like the one that was installed in the car.
ring with threads
shock with just nubs

Yes there is, it's the 'smooth' portion of your old adjusting ring. Probably tightly corroded in place. Start soaking with penetrating oil.

What he said
when I did this I had the same problem. The good news on my car was the corrosion was limited to the top and bottom of the threads. Soaking the parts for a couple days and going at them with a wire brush to clean up the threads at the top and bottom of the sleeve was enough - I was able to break them loose by hand after doing that and pressing them onto the shock body.

if the inner collar doesnt fit very snug,
\add some green loctite to the bosses on the shock tube.
Clean the threads and put antiseize and grease mixed on the threads and the spring perch so the outer collar will be able to be adjusted with the spring load on it

Thanks for that, I still have to remove the seized inner ring from the aluminum adjuster collar.

Just did this job on my 83.
As said, soak with multiple penetrating oil applications
Rather than try to rotate it, squeezing the threads together on opposing sides until there is some play between the pieces worked best for me

If they're stuck like mine were, don't loose your time and buy some new (to you) ones from Mark.
I did. Clean and nice parts at a very good price.

Yeah I've spent may hours buggering about trying to separate old threaded collars from adjusters, with a 50% success rate (out of 8 front shocks). Heat, penetrating oil, and wire brushing the exposed threads so that once it moves you're not fighting corrosion are the key.
However.. its a challenge for the bloody-minded only, and getting used ones from 928intl is much more sensible (I've done that too).
