Default Project Silver

How many miles are really on this car?

Not sure why I doing this and I question myself daily but I do find some enjoyment in bringing this old gal back to life.
I'm deep into restoring a silver 81 comp. There is no history to this car. Sat in a barn for 22 years. All I know is that it once lived in Gainesville FL. The ODO said 81k. When I took it a apart to replace the trip gear I then realized it hadn't worked in a long time.

So far I have taken the interior completely out including the dash. The car had a vinyl dash and a leather console....a ha! I had the sport seats front and rear re done with a Budd kit in vinyl, new carpet. I noticed that the dash was used as it came from an '88 as it has a sticker in the back when it was made.

Just replaced the steering rack which was toast, and now going at the front ball joints ( lowers are still aluminum)!!!! Most all the bushings are need replacing.
When I first took the front brake disk off I noticed that they didn't have the slots...but after further inspection I mic'd them to learn that they are really thin and the slots were just worn away. ( I have cartons of spares that I have collected thru the years)

Another interesting mileage indicator is that the brake/clutch peddles are worn thru...
Either the PO's had really big feet or this sucker has a million miles on it.

Any thoughts?

Hey Van. I had the same question about unknown mileage on my 928 when I first got it. Here is the thread about that which may help you get an idea. There really is no way to know, but you can put together enough clues to get a feel for the probable range of mileage that it has done.

I was really on the fence for a while on what to do with it. Now that I have come to grips with what it is and what I'm up against I going to take it a corner at a time, with the mind set of making it as perfect as I can. No rush, just remove, clean and replace. I have this wild hair idea of changing color. Since the car is currently silver I'm considering painting it a solid light grey ( non metallic ). Also this is a perfect project for me as all I have to do with the red car is drive it and keep it clean.

Not really, that looks like damage that could have been caused by any number of things. I have seen them worn thru on the middle section before, but that was on a literal 500,000 + Mile 79 928.

Nice find, and best of luck with the resto.

Cheers,

Dave

Off to the paint shop.
I'm going back to a spoiler less car. It's interesting how much involved it is removing anything that involves spoilers front and rear. Holes in the front fenders, holes in the rear quarters and in the hatch ( hatch gets replaced)

Nothing pleases me more than seeing these cars brought back from the path of impending doom.. And it all starts with them falling into the right hands

I know I might be going against the grain but I have removed the rear bumperets and we will be filling in the side marker lights. I'm trying to make the car look as light as possible.

FWIW I don't have anything against your choice. To each their own! I appreciate your vision and applaud you for seeing it through.
