Input on 928 purchase
I've been in the market for a 928 for some time and now have 2 options available to me.
The first is a 1987 manual with 130000 km. Timing belt and water pump have not been changed and there is a leak in the steering system. Otherwise, well maintained.
The second is a1987 automatic with 260000 km. All service is up to date.
Both cars are very clean. The automatic is $3500 more.
Which car do you think has the best long term value?
Thanks for your input.

I third the motion for the manual, plus the lower miles. But what are the cosmetics like on both? That matters too.

My 88 5spd has 140k miles and is awesome. Get the manual

Ref "Timing belt and water pump have not been changed" Do you mean ever, or just not within the past 5 years? If it's the former, my spider senses doubt "Otherwise, well maintained."

+1. That might mean they just changed the oil; far more important is the coolant. If the belt has never been changed, it would be a gamble to drive it all.

Cosmetics on the manual are excellent. No dings or scratches. Never painted. no cracks on dash or seats. All original including radio. Always garaged.
Regarding previous service, I waiting on the documentation from the owner (they are on vacation). They are the second owner. They have told me that previous owner owned a high end shop in another city so I hope that bodes well for service. We will see.

When you receive the documentation, here's the link to the 1987 owner's manual. If you go to page 24 you'll find the maintenance schedule. You can then gauge if they were keeping up on stuff - hopefully they were. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzC...WFi/view?hl=en

These cars are GT's, not sports cars. I prefer the automatic, after driving Semis, and my other collector cars are mostly manuals. It'll be yours, do what suits you the best.
Personally, I'd pick the manual, with lower miles, and they didn't build that many, so It'll be worth more down the road. Have fun, good luck!
BTW, the deferred maintenance will eat up that $3500.00 pretty fast if you farm out the work.

That having been said all indications would point to the manual for me as well. I just don't buy the "otherwise well-maintained" comment!
