'78 torque tube removal must trans be removed?
I have been reading the WSM and threads on removing and replacing the TT on my '78 manual US. Thought I had read somewhere in the past that TT could come out without removing the transmission. Maybe wishful thinking. Just wondering if it is possible.

I pulled the TT out of my 79 manual without dropping the transmission or clutch pack although I later had to drop the clutch to replace the upper release arm bushing before installing TT and in hind sight would drop clutch to offer more space.

You will have to cut the lower web in the front bell housing to get the torque tube shaft past...Or you will have to take out the bell housing out
with the tube I have done both.. Easier to just cut the web.. In the car its bolted to the torque tube made of steel so missing a piece will be irrelevant.

Will not be enough room to drop it with 2 inches. So either cut the web or drop the bell housing. The shift linkages stay in the car just have to pop the front cup.. Perfect time to change the shift ball cup and the rear linkage bushings..the front cup is usually toast or will be when you take it off.. The plastic gets old and brittle... Total PITA to change in the car.. Use a big hose camp to put the front cup back on..
